Title: GERRIT OFF'F ME!
Oddball - May 26, 2005 12:05 PM (GMT)
Yes its finally happened, lastnight i trod the route all oddball keepers usually take at somepoint in their interest......
Yes i did the bichir war dance.....
Hand feeding my adult ornates and the female dicedes that the bit of skin between thumb and index looks really tasty and latches on. Of course it dosent register until i see the water turning red, thinking i cut my arm on the edge of the glass i try tro lift my arm she goes frantic, twisting and pulling and generally going half crazy.
By this time the pain registers and i yank my arm out, complete with enraged polypterid, generally swearing and hopping from foot to foot trying to figure out what to do.
Damned thing started twisting then, making it hurt more and more, im just glad now she dosent have teeth like a tiger fish. I lay my arm complete with bichir and run my thumb along to the groove by her throat and mouth, making her let go, scoop her up and chuck her back in.
So not only am i at woek *GRRRRR* i occasionally bleed on my keyboard as well, i guess this should techinically go in rant room but hell, it teaches odd keepers the lesson of caution, or at least how to dance and not care what people think of you.

I've been bit by my bichirs before, they latch on and roll  Lucky for me, mine was 4" long
Oddball - May 28, 2005 07:55 PM (GMT)
Unlucky for me, mines an adult female, not only longer than the male but fatter as well, needless to say shes having to eat her dinner off the floor now :P
Dwarfs - May 29, 2005 04:58 PM (GMT)
I wouldn't imagine you hand feeding that fish again :P
Oddball - May 30, 2005 08:29 PM (GMT)
A little bit off of this topic but i have polypterid fry in my tank :D
Theres a load of them, and im currently overdosing the tank on water fleas as its so big, ive spent something like £80 on daphnia! Ma and Pa are staying in the tank at the mo as the fry is that tiny that they arent bothered by it.
The downside is ive gotta catch them again sometime and split them off from the fry, i wouldnt put it past them to eat the babies when they are bigger and worth the effort of eating

I was going to get a bichir to...
P.S. That story reminds me of the time I was at the fish store and an employee was attacked by a two inch clown fish...he jumped as if he was bitten by a pike....
EricaySFC - May 31, 2005 12:18 AM (GMT)
Interesting..lol. I was hand feeding an ADF and apparently my betta snuck up behind my hand and I didn't see it, but when it nipped at my thumb it scared the crap out of me. It never did that before so it was just a surprise.
I saw some employee at my lfs to try and get a six inch gar or something with a net. It took two nets before he figured out the fish wasn't going to stop slicing a hole in them with its nose.
Congrats on the fry, dude. Are you going to sell them or what?
Oddball - May 31, 2005 07:29 AM (GMT)
Probably add them to the other seven juvies i have at the mo, theres no way i can keep all of them, they get too big as adults, probably keep the "best pair" for mysaelf with the adults and sell the rest, assuming of course they make it through frydom
