Title: Baby Gar?
Description: d'hell is that in the minnow bucket?
Seedy - May 30, 2005 09:56 PM (GMT)
Huh...found an odd little fish in my minnow bucket while fishing this weekend...not sure if he came from the lake through a hole in the bucket, or from the bait shop where I got the minnows....
N-E-ways...I think he's a baby gar...he's an inch long, very very slender and narrow, with a large "snout" of a mouth...He's a tough lil bugger cus he spent three days in a styrofoam minnow bucket on a dock in 85F weather...Every time I'd go to get a minnow, there he was swimming around taunting me....so I took him home and threw him in the guppy tank....
I'm not sure how well he's doing since I assume the last three days have been quite stressful, and he's probably not used to the tropical water temps....He seems to be keeping his eyes and body position in sinc, but I haven't seem him eat yet and he seems to be pushed around by the current a bit much, I'm not sure how he's doing...
Sorry about not having any pics, he's a bit too small to get a pic with my camera phone.
I'll let you all know how it does...

If theres fry, he'll eat well, gars are very voracious and can eta something surprisingly large based on their size (if hes eating you will notice a bulge in its stomach) try introducing some small fry, or some surface dwelling insect lavae like mosquito nymphs etc.

He could be a Pike...they look the same when they are small.
Newayz...good luck with your gar.

Well I'm guessing it's not a halfbeak then. :P

thanks for the replies...I'm still not sure, but after looking at some pics of gars, I think he's gonna be one...however I haven't seen him in tank for a while....
I don't think I'll keep him...I don't have the tank space to house him properly if he is a gar...If it's not an invasive species I'll put it in my Father's goldfish/koi /native pond....it could use a good "thining out"....
Oh, and plenty of baby guppies running around the tank...and more coming all the time...he's really small...so I'm wondering if I need to try some brine shrimp...
I'm not sure if he ate when I fed the guppies or not...

Welll...he's still alive, still active...his belly looks swolen, so me may have gotten a hold of a baby guppy or two :D
He seems a bit more active the last time I saw him, he was swimming strongly against the current from my HOB filter...so I think he may be OK!

Today, when compleating my water changes on Seedy and I's tanks i cannot find the guar type thing. not even in the filter. I think the guppies ate it. :(

He's Still MIA....I think he must have gotten eaten or something...not even a body in the filter....

That sucks. Maybe the guppy parents clued up to what he was and what he would do to their sex crazed society and decided to "dispose" of him. Poor little fella! :P He was enjoying those midnight snacks....
:D

Something similar happened to my daughters swordtail just completely vanished, not on the floor, not behind the tank and these tanks are in a fish room so no cats or anything to eat it when it jumped out, I'm thinking is was a rapture :D
