Title: "Fresh water flounder"
Description: Achirus fasciatus

Seedy - June 14, 2005 04:10 AM (GMT)
Just picked up one of these lil guys to grow out in the guppy tank...

So far it seems to be doing well....I got it on impulse, but have been doing a little reading on them...looks like they are nocturnal feeders, and need a high protein diet...besides my normal guppy feeding, I've also been giving them some bloodworms and brine shrimp after I turn out the light....I have never seen the "fresh water flounder" (actually a mis-nomer as this species is really in the sole family) eat...but then again, the lights are out...

Any one have any good info, experience, or links on these guys?

 I'm not sure I got the right ID then...what other species are known as "fresh water flounders"?

Dang....as soon as I get out of the Rift Lakes, I don't know crap about fish species....

the only things i know is that they're brakish (unless you go a different species, which is highly doubtful)
and they dont grow very large

Yeah...I still haven't even nailed down the species for sure....and I've been getting lots of conflicting info on them...some people say they require brackish...others say they are extemly halotolerant and can live their whole lives in fresh water....I've got some aqurium salt in the water for the livebearers...but no real salinity level to speak of....It's still alive and swimming....I feed bloodworms and brineshrimp after the lights go out...

Not sure if this will help or not, but try searching using this: "Trinectes maculatus", also called hog chokers, it's a salt water flounder that lives in freshwater when young.

Maybe this is what you have, it seems to be pretty popular in petstores. ???

I had a freshwater flounder when i was younger...but it didn't live very long. I fed it cichlid sinking pellets and the petstore told me it was completely freshwater, but i don't know b/c i only had it a few months. Maybe it would have done better in brackish??

Remembered about this when i saw your question, as oddballs fascinate me. :)

Thanks MLH....The Hogchoker (gawd I love that name :gross: ) is one of the fish I think it could be....Now I'm not so sure what to do with it, as I'm not planning on setting up any brackish tank....I'm not to crazy about keeping fish that I can't sustain for their complete lifecycle...(this is one of my magor issues with reef tanks, sure you can frag coral, but TMK no one has ever spawned coral in the aqurium)
