Thats a peacock of some kind...I'm think a hybrid variety of of jacobfreibergei...
...Was it sold as something like "Hot pink peacock"?
Aulonocara species...
Barf - June 17, 2005 01:06 AM (GMT)

its a albino ruby red auloncara.I have one also.
Seedy - June 17, 2005 07:07 AM (GMT)
Barf....
Close, the fish in quesiton is not an albino however, as it has black pigment in it's eyes....
I am fairly sure that this is an Auloncara hybrid commonly sold under the trade name of "Aulocara species 'hot pink'" aka "hot pink peacock"....
It is a more recently developed man made strain of fish, and is more likely than not a hybrid of two or more peacock species....This fish would not be found in the lake....

SOmethin's Fishy...
For Your info...
The fish commonly reffered to a an "albino" ruby red is technichally a "amelanistic ruby red" as it does still have some Melanin.....It is similiar to the different varieties of "albino" cornsnakes that have been bred....It is still a genetic condition very similiar to albinism...but not quite the same.... :bla:

Yes! that pic somethin's fishy sent is looks just like my fish! Its definitely a aulonocara species... thanks heaps for that guys.. where can i get info for it?
Seedy - June 17, 2005 10:15 PM (GMT)
Care is like most other "peacocks"...if you google aulonocara, you should get some good info on them...
IN general, they are harem spawners. Males are colorful, females are drab. Ruby Reds are a strain developed in Germany...They like a fairly high protein diet, but are quite omnivorous and appreciate some spirulina for their blue color....they like a pH around 8...temp around 78/80 F....
They are also notorious for crossbreeding, so if you plan on breeding them, make sure you only have one peacock species in the tank...
Hope this helps....I've been breeding peacocks for a couple of years now, and they are very rewarding fish...max size is probably 5-6 inches for older tank raised fish....One peacock I bred and raised out, recently sold for $55 US here in town....

The one on the left is Cynotilapia sp. "Mbweca"....It bears a striking resembelance to P. dakarti though....I usually have to look at the mouth to tell them apart....Cynotilapia have very distict teeth...very mean looking!

Looks like some type of M. Estherae x Aulono. Stuartgranti cross possibly.
Seedy - June 21, 2005 03:05 AM (GMT)
I don't know Orbital....I'm pretty convinced it is an Aulonocara hybrid/linebred type fish...large eye..."happy" mouth...I'm just not seeing the Mbuna influence....
The blue stripe on the top of the dorsal fin, and the large dent in the forehead lead me to think it was derived from a "jake"

could be, hybrids are unpredictable. Reguardless of how well the strain has been refined. I just see some Estherae traits in it. Maybe I'm seeing things.
