take a look at the first link in the pinned thread i posted in this forum. the link covers your question about how to minimize the stress to your fish during the cycling process. you are going to want to do small daily partial water changes.

you are also going to need to buy another test kit if you can't find yours. you're going to need it.

Thank you so much, those links were very helpful! I have done a water change and I bought some ammo-carb, and put it in the filter, now the smell is gone!! yay! Now i live in a small town, so i have to go to Austin tommorow to get an ammonia kit... I found a Ph kit of my moms at her house!
thanks again, you have saved about lives today! My guppies are happy!

I would do at least a 30% water change every couple of days. If possible if you know someone with an established aquarium that is a healthy tank try to get some of the mulm from its intake tube of his filter, and put it into your filter. It will contain lots of bacteria that is needed. You could also get some fast growing plants to add to it, some amquel+ will also help.

You are still cycling, which will take about 5 - 7 weeks to finish. I really wouldn't put anymore fish into the tank until it is finished cycling. The ammonia is spiking and when it drops the nitrites will spike then after that your nitrates will start coming up. Ammonia and nitrites are poison to fish and it will shorten there lives and do a lot of damage to the poor fish.
