Title: The great dwarf puffer debate
Description: should I get one?
OrkyBetta - July 9, 2005 05:51 AM (GMT)
I am on the fence about getting a dwarf puffer. I am tempted to get one just because my lfs keeps them in barracks about the size of betta cups, 2 per square, and feeds them on dried foods. The poor guys just look miserable. I have always liked dwarf puffers, and I know I could take care of one fine and all, but I also feel like I need some encouragement, as I am having doubts on buying one. Anyone who has one, tell me more about them and why you like them, maybe?
thanks!

Okay this is going to sound a little rough but i cant give any encouragement as i dont know what you intend to keep him in, feed him what foods and whether you plan to keep anything else with him (the biggest debate surrounding DPs), if you can give me the details im sure we can offer some advice

My idea was to put him in my cycled 6 gallon tank, feed him (or her) on frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and snails (as that is really all that's availible around here besides flake and pellets) and I would NEVER keep anything with it. It would end up dead. :cheeky:

I love my little puffer...he comes out of hiding when he sees me and watches what I am doing!
I have tried feeding him/her frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp...he isn't too hot on the idea. But, I have found that he loves the little critters that live in our ponds. He chases down the little bugs and nymphs like a pro!!!
Believe it or not...he lives with a pair of killie fish!!! I made sure there were hiding places and all...but they seem to do great. And this is in a 5 gallon aquarium.

Glad it worked out for you. I'd still never be brave enough to try it. If DPs are anything like bettas, they will be fine with a tankmate for a while, then...BAM theyre dead. :bitchslap:

i'd say your plan is dead on. make sure to give him ghost shrimp once in a while too! i've never found them to be fond of brine shrimp though. mainly bloodworms and ghost shrimp.
you could try to put something else with him. there are some tamer ones
