Title: Yeevia and other seasoned betta breeders...
Description: advice and strange behavior...

My female betta keeps stopping under the male and "tickling" his belly with her dorsal fin. Is she trying to stimulate him to breed? Is she trying to tell him she's ready and he's not realizing it??

She also will swim in front of him, then stop, he follows, she swims some more and stops...etc. I know that this is part of the spawning dance....but if he's understanding that part, why isn't he understanding the rest? lol

What's the maximum amount of time i should give them before deciding they aren't compatible? Some webpages say 1 week, some say 2 weeks. Some say seperate them for a while and try again...what would you do??

I do have some other males i could pair her with, i have a dirty cambodian combtail male and a opaque and steel blue(though it almost looks black)superdelta male as well....but i really wanted to pair her with this male...do i need to be more patient??

Thanks! :)

If they didn't breed on the 4 days, take them out. The male don't know how to breed or just exhausted and maybe the surrounding is not right. Do not feed while you put them to spawn. Recondition the girls again for another week if you want to breed her with another male. Makesure you have two containers and put them side by side so they both can see each other for a week before put them to breed.
Look again how I set up in my breeding. Check it and read through it in breeding section. :)

Thanks Yeevia! i did as you suggested and seperated them today. I guess i'll re-condition my female when her tail has healed a bit, he did take a little bit out of it, and then possibly try her with my superdelta.

My SD is opaque white and steel blue, i think he carries marble, b/c for the first 3.5 months i owned him, he was just solid opaque white. Now he's got blackish-steel blue streaks on his fins. Maybe i'll just try him.

I'll try to get some good pic's of him tonight, to show the before steel blue and after steel blue. lol

But i'll give my girl some time to heal and then re-condition her and try her with someone else.

Thanks for all of the advice and suggestions you have given me so far, i really do appreciate them and they helped a lot. :) Now i have to wait a bit. lol

You are welcome. Makesure no more gravel this time. Least stuff is the best because when the babies hatching, they don't swim. They dart around up and down or side way. This will be real hard for the male to see it and if they dart into the gravel. Put a bubble wrapper on top of the water. Empty in the tank is good but one plant is ok. After done breeding, you can add more plants so it will grew more infusia. :) Those are babies food too. :)
Someone has told me that get a breeding tank, put new aged conditional water and put a lot of plants. Leave it for a week to let it growth the infusia. Take out the plant and start putting the pair into the breeding tank. Makesure put the girl in a round divider for at least 3 hours like what you did. Then release her. Don't worried if the male haven't build a bubble nest because he will always build it in the morning. :) Always makesure you did put them side by side in their own 1 gal container and conditioning them to be FAT in a week. Oh yes, feed them full before you put the pair to breed in the breeding tank. Do not feed anymore until done the breeding process. :) Male will not eat anything you given him and if he did eat the eggs, basically those eggs are unfertilized. He know because their eyes are sharper. Don't get panic if a lot of eggs been eaten by him. If he don't do that, the unfertilizer eggs will get fungus and spread to the fertilizer egg. Temperature always up 80F and no below that. :)
