Humm, I guess that works good enough. Just not quiet like I wanted. Hey maybe one day I can move into the rest of the world in the new mellinium.....

Well thats the only Clam out of the six I had that survived the great Tank Crash of Feb 2005...thanks to a broken heater and 120 volts of electricity  I guess sooner or later even the best of us have to get our cherry broke. Just wished it would have been one of my other tanks....

But Dang I went to Barry's site today (Clams Direct) and I could have maxed out a Platinum CC in a heart beat!!! I think that is the best shipment of Tridacna Clams he has had in the last 2 years!!! It made me dizzy just looking at them...

I will be adding some pics in the near future.

I am awaiting a shipment of SPS corals from Mike at MDM Aquatics that should get here Tues.

I will also be getting hot on getting my 75 gallon tank back up and running. This tank will have Tahitian Moon sand, some choice live rock lots of clams and SPS corals. Im going to try and set it up with an above tank refugium and plant it with some Eel Grass and maybe some Red Mangroves too. I havent quiet hammered out all of the details as I will be building the stand my self as well as the 55 gallon refugium. Gotta love those DIY projects.

I am thinking with the jet black sand, pink/purple Live rock, some sweet SPS corals and some off the hook looking Croceas and Maximas it ought to look real sweet and make for a rather striking display tank thats a bit unique and off the beaten path!

sounds bitchin' now you got me researching reef tanks.:D

Fair warning....

Reef tanks are addicting!

Especially if you start getting clams in the mix. If you get a chance check out www.clamsdirect.com. Barry's out of San Diego and has some of the most Jaw Dropping clams posted on the sight for sale that I have seen in a long while. Its some major eye candy!

man thats colorful

Ritsuko Nashida - March 27, 2005 06:09 PM (GMT)
That is a pretty nice one to be sure but they occasionally come better than that!

But none the less thanks for the good comments. I cant wait to get the 75 finished and up and running. I think I am going to shoot for a "Clam Slam". I want to find an exceptional example of a T. Gigas, T. Derasa, T. Squamosa, T. Maxima, T. Crocea and H. Hippopus! That would be too cool to have a tank full of "Eye Candy" like that!

Also, Warning: Reef tanks are expensive!

If you dont have the cash to properly light, filtrate or heat, reef tanks shouldnt be considered. Lighting alone could run you up a few hundred dollars, depending on tank size. And dont even think about SPS unless you have some nice Metal Halides!

I love that clam though. I've never really looked into clams. They sure are gorgeous though, aren't they?

The lighting alone on my 125 cost me over 1200.00 easily!!! But dang did I have some smoking hot clams in it....

The 75 Im setting up as a clam tank during the course of this week will have about 800.00 in lighting on it. The Display was 99.00. The sand was 80.00. I am estimating that the Live Rock is going to run about 400-500.00 depending on the quality of the rock. The sump is a 55 gallon tank I bought for 43.00 and the other componets to make it into a Sump/refugium will run about another 80.00. The Skimmer was about 300.00 counting the pump. The over flow Box and plumbing was about 120.00. I am building the stand and it is going to cost around 100.00. I will probably have another 200.00 in misc expenses too. So... that kinda gives you an idea of what the "Big Picture" really looks like.

A lot of this would be more expensive except I am making a lot of it myself. A stand and canopy could have easily cost 250.00 for this type of set up. The sump I am building could have easily cost 350-400.00 for an comparable sump of this capacity if I went out and bought one from a dealer. If I buy uncurred live rock from an on-line dealer I can probably cut the cost of the rock down to under 300.00 for the same 80 lbs of rock.

Yes with Reef Tanks....sometimes you gotta have long arms and deep pockets if you know what I mean. But fear not! It doesnt always have to be that brutally expensive, but it can get that way real quick depending on just how far you really want to take it and how many mistakes you make along the way becuase you didnt research things or have a good plan. There are lots of DIY projects out there that can cut the expenses down a good bit.
