Description: confused here

mrsdoubtfire - July 10, 2005 09:21 PM (GMT)
hi! this morning i had a female give birth. all 21 babies survived and so did mom. well, went to check on the main tank and found another female guppy had just gave birth. well, immediately, i got the little guy out only to find another 2 babies just dropped. ok so at this point i look throughout the bowl trying to figure out which female was giving birh. i narrowed it down to 3 fat females but the i got confused because i saw the males chasing all of them still trying to mate. my question is....will a male guppy try to mate with a female who is already pregant?

Yes they will try, if seen them hounding the females in my tank ALL of the time. Now i dont know of the sperm packets make it over to the females if they are pregnant to be stored or not but they are like typical males they will always try.

When a female is giving birth the male tends to hound her more, simply because when she has finshed giving birth, if he inseminates her, she will eject most of the stored sperm and keep the new males sperm. However while the female is giving birth he will not be able to inseminate her. The female can store sperm for upto 6 drops of fry.
