Title: Betta with severe pop eye problem
Description: Might be too late for him.

Found him in wal mart tonight. His popeye was allowed to progress so far that I think they have popped ( :cuss: Wal-mart= :dickhead: ). I have him in a gallon kritter keeper with salt and melafix. Is there any other meds I should try with him? After they pop, what are the chances of them living, and if they do live, will they ever see again?

Often alot of fish will survive and adapt fine after having pop-eye, however i would use a anti-bacterial remedy to help repair the flesh. Melafix, will help, salt can help prevent further infection. But if you really want to blast it out use a anti-bacterial medicate, i dont know what you have were you live, but here its a black bottle, called "antidote"$6.

Thanks. I'll get some maracyn2 in there after his first water change then. That's the strongest stuff that I have that'll treat pop eye. I'll just have to figure out the dosage. That'll be fun. I might be able to go out and find some colodial silver in the next couple of days. That should knock it outa there pretty quick.

I'd go for the M2 also. Tetracycline would be my first choice at the point he sounds like he's at but M2 should do just fine also.
For dosing, I have a really sharp garden pruner that I cut the tablets with. What I usually do is do like 50 ml of tank water into a solo cup, then put the 1/4 crushed tablet in. Then you'll want to let it fully dissolve, then using a medicine dropper you can suck up 20 ml the first day, and 10 ml of the medicated water and squirt it right into the tank for the remaining days.
Colloidal would work wonders too - don't know if you have any of that, but it would be worth trying if you do.
I'd skip the melafix - it's not going to help him at the point he's at, in fact it might be irritating his tender eye sockets.
If he does lose his eyes, and if you can keep them from getting infected and killing him, he should have a chance at a somewhat normal life. I have a blind betta and he gets around very well. Your little guy would just need to learn how to get around without hurting himself - and teaching them to find food isn't that hard because they can smell it.
Good luck with him - he sounds like a trooper!

Thanks BM. I'll do a WC today to get rid of the MF and start with the M2 treatments ASAP.

I would make sure to get enough for two treatments of myrcyn 2 , if it is as severe as it sounds, it will probably take two treatments to make sure its compleatly gone and not just looking better. do a 20% water change in between treatments. Fallow package directions to see how soon to start the second treatment after the first round is compleated.

Thanks. Sounds like a good idea. I think it's 3 days but will have to look at the package again.

psst - how's your little guy coming along?

So far so good. He's such a little trooper. Too bad I can't get him a little seeing eye corry or something. I'd love to see him swim around some.

Well, he's still alive, but I haven't seen too much of an improvement in his eyes. They look about the same as they did the day I brought him home.

You don't happen to have any colloidal silver do you?
I've heard that stuff is wonderful for tender membranes like eyes.
Might be worth a shot...
