Title: Crayfish

kkeggie - July 12, 2005 08:06 AM (GMT)
I have a crayfish. To me its an oddball! He is called a cherax quad and is really great to watch.

He will grow to about 6inch or so. He is currently 3 1/2 inch.

I do have some pics but they aint the best.

He chases the cories, the cories gang up on him.......

when he gets bigger is shall get another tank for the fish and leave him in my 23gal with a few fast top dwellers.

Got up this morning, looked at the tank and i saw lobby lying on his side. i though oh my god....hes dead. looked again and noticed he was a bit pale and see through......looked again and there was lobby under the log.

HES MAULTED YEY.

I so wish i could have seen him mault. I didnt even suspect it. They are supposed to act all subdued before a mault but he was much more active. Anyway, i thought he had maulted whilst i was on holiday....obviously not.

Anyway, i just wanted to tell you all cos i was really excited.

His colours are more vibrant now, deeper blue and he has lost some of the pinky colouration. His body is lighter blue with white speckles (its not white spot! just his natural colour)

I was gonna take a pic of his skeleton this morn with my camera phone (dont have digi cam) but i 4got. I just hope he hasnt eaten it before i get home.

I have a crawfish in my baby cichlid tank... he is really good about cleaning up the bottom.

Don't see him too often, but its always fun to watch him.

I caught him in the nearby river and put him in there..there was more than one, but that was when the tank belonged to the parrot fish....big ol' pest that they are, probably ate one! LOL

Might get some and put them in the other tanks for bottom cleaning...think my platies and others are fast enough to stay away from them....

When I was a kid I put a tiny baby one in mom's community tank without telling her, every so often i broke off his big claws to keep the fish safe. After about 2 years my mom noticed that her angelfish were looking ragged and finally found the crayfish, she almost shit, the thing was about 2 inches long, Boy was she pissed! She made me release him back into the ditch. She still gives me gruff about that  .

i use to have a crayfish but it kept picking on the bottom dwellers, is there a way of keeping the claws closed? in fish markets i saw lobsters with rubberbands on there claws, and another idea i heard of was breaking the claw off so it can't pinch the fish can u use theres methods?

Mother nature designs them to grow the large claws back in case they loose them in fights during mating season, so yes you can, the one I put in Mom's tank was good at feeding itself with the little claws.

how about rubberbands, are they ok?
i could tie small ones right?

As long as I keep mine well fed they don't seem to have a problem with the fish in the tank. I often make sure that i place food just outside their dens so that they get enough food. My crayfish like raw chicken, bloodworms, earthworms as well as anything else they get on the gravel.

Mine are quite large now. I'm not sure of the type of crayfish i have. It's quite difficult to get freshwater crayfish in the uk. I love watching them get much bigger after they loose their shells. I think i have a male and female as they get on quite well.

Here are some pics of mine in my community tank.

This one I laugh at as they seen me coming and both tried to fit through a small opening to get to me...

It's funny to hear 'crayfish' referring to ... yabbies?

This is what a crayfish is to me (South Australian):
