Title: Crowntail ray woes
BettaMomma - July 12, 2005 03:35 PM (GMT)
My crowntail Six is looking pretty ratty.
His bottom rays have always been bad because he prefers to drag himself across the bottom of his tank, and swim under stuff. I plan to pick up some flat marbles and give that a try versus gravel.
BUT - lately almost all of his rays are twisted, curled or just plain broken off. :cuss:
I give him 100% water changes twice a week and he gets a pretty good variety of food.
Are crowntails just more susceptible to having bad fin conditions? I also have a vt here at the office who gets the same routine - same food, same water changes, etc - and he's for the most part in great shape.
I've even tried adding 550ppm colloidal to Six's tank - that surely makes him bubblenest but doesn't seem to do anything for his tail. Anyone have suggestions for me?
Uugh.

hmmm well my CT has the same thing... me thinks its do to there need for PERFECT water... :/ i dont have near perfect water... but when i moved his waterchanges to 50% everyother day his fins came back to normal... i added a few drops of salt and bettafix ... and his tail grew back (what lil had came off) :) HTH cause im not as smart as most people here! :(

Hmm - maybe I'll try the 50% every other day thing for a while and see if that helps.
It's irritating for sure!

My crowinies the only one that bites his tail, the veails don't even though their fins are pobably twice the length of his

well see when i read up on the curling thing on TFF i thought i might change his waterchanges to special everyother day ones... and his tail started to curl back then i added a bit of salt (like... 5 grains :P) and his tail came back :) nicely might i add... if he wasnt missing a section i could so show him!

BettaMomma, try get a 4/5 gallon tupperware $3.99 and see is this work better. Crowntail needs more room to swim too and you don't have to change water that frequently. Once per two weeks or so. Just siphfon out the poop whenever you have time. Easy work for you I tell ya and won't stress the betta. :)
My halfmoon babies love it because of more room to swim and the rays are straighter. They are prettier. Justhal, you hear that! :) TIPS from me. :)

 I 'heard' you, YB... I'm looking into some new containers myself! I want something that's TOTALLY CLEAR, though - isn't the tupperware only semi-clear? kinda frosted??? I want to be able to see the fish in case anything is going on...
Right now, I'm moving all my fish into gallon jars. I let the girs share a tank, but the boys are in jars. There's a deli in the building where I work, and they're saving the plastic gallon jars from their 'bulk' relish, pickles, and hot peppers for me. I give the guy $1 each for them, and they're working really well. I change the water every 3-4 days, and siphon the poop out with a turkey baster as it builds up between water changes.
BUT when the giants get here, I'm going to need something bigger. I think I'll put them in a divided 10 gallon.
I also looked at these:

They're 6 3/4" square and 7 3/8" high. A carton of 8 is $27.25, and that includes shipping... what do you think??? They're available here:
https://secure.foxinet.net/ccw/orderform.htmlI don't know, though - I need to work out housing for all the fish I have and expect to have...

I am thinking about just getting a 5 gallon minibow for the big baby and seeing if that helps him. He's just gonna have to deal with a filter in that case.
I have upped his water changes to 3 times a week now, and I am seeing some really good new growth on the bottom spikes on his tail - and I have been adding colloidal to his water too, and they seem like they're growing back pretty well.
Those jars look pretty cool justhal - I'd have to get bigger ones, though, cuz all my fish are now in 2.5G tanks and they are spoiled rotten little brats and I'd probably have a revolt on my hands if I were to switch them over. :)

too small. Need bigger. Tupperware is fine because you still can see through it. They all still can see next to each other. Have you buy one and try it out? See if you like it or not but so far, I love it because you can stack them up on top each other. :)
TacoFrano - July 14, 2005 06:03 PM (GMT)
lmao i can see yeevas house with like 5millon tupperware things stacked up very high all over his house hahahaha
BettaMomma - July 14, 2005 06:45 PM (GMT)
I have a feeling his house isn't really a house at all - it's just an igloo made out of tupperware containers.
yeeviabettas - July 14, 2005 07:34 PM (GMT)
OHHH. I like that idea!! A tupperware iglo with all betta. LOL:) Yesterday my walmart got new stock of tupperware!!! OLALA!

Right now he's at WalMart.
Someone's using a forklift to load a pallet of tupperware into the back of his betta wagon right now.
