in two of my glass bowls there is a film of something on the top of the water. even a few hours after a water change it is really weird. should i worry about it?

No need to worry about it, it's natural. I've seen this 'problem' alot but seriously alot of people have it so do not worry. I've read it's because of your water or your dechlorinator. Anyone wanna help me here?

If you using tupperware with lid, you will not getting the film. Interesting huh? :) That is why tupperware is YUM YUM GOOD! :)
I hate those film too and I always get a tiny container and tried to drain the top layer into the container . Then you get it clear again.

I heard you can use a cloth and just gently scoop out the film. Ooooh I think the film is caused by dust in the air since tupperware, with it's lid on, does not have any film. No clue though but I'm sure the film isn't harmful.

I've also heard it's a buildup of protein in the water... hahaha. Don't worry about it. Doesn't bother your bettas at all, just you... and me.. heh. You can use a paper towel to soak it up if it really bothers you.

I got that film too when I took the UGF's out of my tanks. It's one of the reasons I put the UGF's back in. It doesn't harm the betta, but it's yuck, and I know I wouldn't want to have to break through a layer of yuck every time I needed to take a breath. :gross:

yeah i wish they made reasonable priced filters for 1g bowls :/

I was really irritated long ago when I had a slimy film problem.
WELL actually my TANKS had the film problem.

I did a ton of research and the film comes from one of several things, and it actually can cause problems with the fish if it's left to get too thick. The film is a combination of things - partially from the natural slime coat on the fish, partially from stress coat (if you use it or some other slime-inducing conditioner) and just naturally from lack of surface agitation.

Since bettas are surface breathers, if the film gets too thick it can get to be a real problem for them if they go up for a breath and they have too much slime and gook to get thru for air. Think of it as you having a really nasty cold and only being able to breathe thru your nose.

Yeah.

how do you get rid of it

BettaMomma - July 13, 2005 09:27 PM (GMT)
Not much you can do when they're in bowls.
Surface agitation will help it - like a bubble bar but in a bowl you can't do that or the current will be too great.
