i saw one of those on animal planet.. some natives were hunting and killing one because someone got killed by its stinger... that thing was freakin huge. like 3 people long it seemed like!

Well, there are plenty of smaller species of freshwater rays. They all obviously require larger tanks for the most part. The ease of keeping also changes from species to species. (whether they're available as native fish in Australia I do not know)

Potamotrygon motoro
Potamotrygon leopoldi
Potamotrygon histrix
Potamotrygon sp.
Potamotrygon menchacai
Potamotrygon brachyura
Potamotrygon henlei
Paratrygon aiereba
Potamotrygon reticulata
Potamotrygon castexi
Plesiotrygon iwamae
Dasyatis breekeri

Wow, lol. Well if you ever planned on going on a trip to find some native freshwater stings, then I would check if you have any of those near you (Australians). Some of those grow quite big, but most don't get any bigger than a meter.
