Title: How To Divide a 10 Gallon?
bettaphile - July 16, 2005 03:28 PM (GMT)
Hey guys, as I'm sitting here trying to have some nice time online my five gallon's airpump is getting louder and louder and driving me nuts. It's not broken it's just loud and when it vibrates over to the edge of the compartment it's in and touches the side it gets even worse. Sounds like a perfect excuse to get a new tank. I'm would like to get another ten gallon and am toying with the idea of putting in a divider and housing both Pewter and Wraith in it. What do I need to divide a tank and how is it done? I don't want to run the risk of having the divider fall either as I'm pretty sure Wraith could take Pewter in a second, just based on their size and Wraith's signs of aggression with his food and anything that goes up to his tank. He is so manly.
Also, if that's the case, would it be a major stressor to have the two next to each other or will he eventually get over himself and be OK with having a neighbor.

Just get some craft canvas (like needlepoint I think) and use aquarium sealant to get it in.
Not quite sure I understand though. Why don't you turn that airpump off? Why do you use it? How does this directly effect your 5 gallon? You could always split the 5...

Well for a few bucks you can buy a divider for a 10 gallon...or make one out of plastic canvas(like someone suggested)...but instead of using sealant to make it permanent(what if you want to undivide it later??), use those report binders(plastic things that slide over a report and usually come with a clear cover and back cover sheet)...the plastic binders hold the plastic canvas in place and weigh it to keep it from floating...and it's not permanent.
Of course with any divider that is dividing aggressive fish, you'll want to play around with it before there are fish on both sides...but a lot of ppl do the plastic binder and canvas thing for bettas without any prob's. I'm pretty sure i can find some webpages...if i do, i'll edit this in a bit. :)

OK, here goes again, I wrote this and when I hit send I got an error telling me I lost my internet connection. Grrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, Seahorse, the airpump is for the airstone and UGF. I didn't want to leave the tank with no filter or aeration. I have been aching to replace this tank anyway because it is old (I got it used at a garage sale in '97) and I don't find hex tank very attractive. I also thought, if I could divide it, two of my guys would have bigger and better homes.
For now, I have the tank all set up for Wraith alone (I went out and got it today). I think I will look into dividing it more (any more links or info would still be welcome) and possibly do that in the not so far future.
If anybody knows a good way to slow the flow that would be good to know too. I have placed a clean mason jar into the tank with lots of plants to give him places to hang out that are free from flow but he still might like it if it wasn't quite so fast. Thanks!

I knew if i searched through my 100's of bookmarks, i'd find it:
Deep Blue Bettas: Making a divided tank.In this one, they do hot glue it to the tank walls....but i guess hot glue is easier to remove than aquarium sealant...hot glue will peel off, i don't know if a.s. will. :)
Hope it helps some. :)

You could do what I did for a while - do the whole craft canvas splitting, but divide it into 3 compartments. The middle one can be dedicated to the filter. That way nobody has to battle the current. The other 2 (left and right) compartments can house fish. That way the flow is okay between the compartments w/fish but nodoby is really bugged by the filter.
For the splitting, I bought the actual dividers with the turquoise dividers in from Penn Plax. Later I decided that the plastic piece with holes in it just didn't quite cut it, so I ditched the plastic pieces and used plastic canvases as the dividers. Still used the turquoise parts, but pitched the plastic part. And with the fish being that far apart, they didn't get bugged w/someone else being in the tank.
This setup gave them each about 4 gallons to roam.

Cool, I actually stopped at the LPS to get cat food today after church and found a divider and it was only $9 so I got it and just put it in. More cool though is that when I took off the hood to do the work Wraith had built a massive bubble nest in the corner of the new ten gallon. He must really like it in there, making it all ready for a girlfriend and stuff. He's wookin' pa nub for sure!
It's a good thing that we got it, too because when we were there my hubby pointed out a very pretty betta on the shelf and when I took a closer look he has fin rot. So now we need Pewter's one gallon for the new guy and Pewter's moving in the ten gallon. So technically this new guy is my hubby's so he gets to name it and all. Pictures will come soon I'm sure.
