Title: Let's Talk About Genetics...
Description: :)

MLH Fish - July 17, 2005 03:04 AM (GMT)
Thought it might be cool, since i noticed some ppl asking "What will i get if i cross X & X?" type questions, if we talked a bit about genetics. Doesn't have to be anything fancy, just thought we should start a thread for the above mentioned question. And get some experts like Yeevia or Dong to answer them. lol

I know very, very little about genetics. lol What i do know, i read on Jim Sonniers page. lol He has lot's of good info, but nothing about the new colors out there like copper, golds, platinums, etc. This was last i checked....

So, what do you know about genetics and if you know as little as I do lol, what are your genetic questions?? I'll start out:

What would i get if i crossed a male orange veiltail with a female classic cambodian double-ray ct? I know the veiltail would outwin the shorter tail, but what would the color combo's be? Assuming neither fish carries anything weird that might cause a multicolor. lol

Great idea about genetics MLH. Well I can't answer that question because I'm clueless about genetics too =p but I do know (I think) that orange is also a form of red-loss like yellow. Try it out and see

Here's a pretty good link for betta color genetics: http://vanriel.myadsl.nl/BT-AABcolorgenetics.htm

I've read here and elsewhere that the gold/copper colors were the result of outcrossing with another betta species (imbellis or mahachai), and that the genetics for that color are not yet known.

Orange is another color that is not very well understood, genetically speaking.

Here's another cool betta genetics page: http://www.deepbluebettas.com/genetics.shtml You can plug in the genetic makeup of both parents to predict what the spawn will look like using his genetics predictor page...

So according to this page: Betty Splendens: Opaque's and Pastels, the genetic make-up of an opaque is:

C: Cambodian gene for lack of body pigment, cambo is double recessive
Bl: Steel blue for silvery white color
Si: spread iridescence for to wash the steel blue over entire fish for the silvery white color
Nr: non-red so there's no red(double recessive).
Op: opaque for the powdery appearance of the final color.

Now, if i take a classic cambo female(which cambodian is double recessive too) and breed her with my opaque...since the male carries the non-red which is double recessive...will i throw out yellow cambos, orange cambo's, and possibly chocolates, etc.???

This genetics stuff sooo interests me and confuses me and i am loving it and hating it at the same time. :starwars: Makes me wish i'd paid attention in high school. lol

I've heard from Jim Sonnier (I think it was him) that opaque gene is dominant.

Now i'm even more confused. lol I didn't see that on the Betty Splendens page, but i'm not saying it wasn't there..it is almost 4 am here and i haven't been to bed yet. lol

So if there's all of those double recessives and the opaque is dominant...what does that mean? lol

I've emailed Jim with some of my questions, he's soooo nice. Very patient too. lol Bet he's glad i now have all of you to bother. heheheh Just kidding. :)

I think i'm going to bed. lol I'll be missing for a few days, going to my grandma's and all, i'll prolly be home late Tuesday or Wednesday...hopefully i'll have a better understanding then. hehehehehehe Or else y'all will have figured it out for me?? *hint* *hint* hehehehehe

Jim Sonnier reply for my other unsuccesful spawn:

QUOTE
Hi Jason,
Nice to hear from you.
The Opaque trait is dominant, so if you breed an Opaque to a
non-Opaque
the offspring will show an intermediate amount of Opaque.
Good luck,
Jim Sonnier
