Title: Strain names and how they change...
Description: Don't ask why i rhymed that...lol

Okay, here's something i always wonder about when i see new strains on AquaBid and on the net on ppl's webpages:

Say you bought a male from a breeder and they named the strain(we'll use Dong's strain names, b/c hopefully he won't get mad lol): Galaxy.

Your female comes from someone else and no strain names were mentioned, we'll call her Aquabid female(you know from an importer who just says, imported from Thailand).

Then you get babies when you breed them...now do you have to call all of the babies Galaxy babies...or can you call them whatever name you have picked out for a strain of that color?? Like say instead of Galaxy i wanted to advertise my babies as being from my White Light strain...or something. lol Do you have to say something like: These babies are from my White Light strain, parents are: male Galaxy from Dong and female from Aquabid.???

I want to start my own strains...but you have to start with bettas from other ppl's strains...so is the right thing to do, to always give credit to the starting parents??

Don't want to be rude and offend ppl. :)

Some (most?) breeders will specifically ask that you *not* use their strain names. The name belongs to the original breeder. Once you breed your own (even if you use 2 fish from the same breeder/strain) they become your line. Name 'em whatever you want...

Lots of good information on this can be found here:

Thanks for the site, i have BettaTalk bookmarked, but ppl are always posting to parts of it i have never seen. lol And i spend a lot of time looking at her fish and reading all of the info on there. :)

Anyways, that was exactly what i wanted to know...i just didn't want to breed bettas, name a strain and have a breeder i purchased fish from email me, call me, whatever and say, "Why aren't you giving me credit since you started with my fish???"

I haven't even got my bettas to spawn yet and mine are from an importer and no strain names were mentioned...but i like to be sure of everything BEFORE i get started. Like to be prepared, cover all of my bases, that sort of thing. :)

So again, thanks. :)

That^^ sounds *exactly* like me! I've been researching and preparing for *months*... with my luck I won't even get a decent bubble nest out of my boy! I think I read every page (aLL 500 OF 'em) on Faith's website TWICE before I actually took the plunge and ordered my fish from her! The betta's I'll be trying for my first spawn are from her - she's got some beautiful fish!
