Title: HOME GROWN
Description: fish... not anything else
justhal - July 30, 2005 05:19 PM (GMT)
Okay, as I learn how to use this camera I thought I'd post a couple shots of my 'home bred' bettas. Through the week I change water - but today is jar cleaning day. So don't mind the debris...
The marbles were a surprise from the spawn - but I'm very fond of them. The coppers were what I was really going after.
These guys hatched March 8th of this year...

Here's his future girlfriend... Jewell.
justhal - July 30, 2005 05:21 PM (GMT)
Jewell and one of her copper sisters...
justhal - July 30, 2005 05:22 PM (GMT)
...and one of the copper boys. He seems a little down in the dumps today, and wouldn't flare.
yeeviabettas - July 30, 2005 05:40 PM (GMT)
Marble with marble will create more marbles. Maybe you going to get marble in melano too since they both have the father gene. I think that is a great pair to start with. :smoke:
Did you have photoshop justhal? You might used that to correct the right color. Just click the auto level. I think. :)Here is the picture I just click an auto level.
justhal - July 30, 2005 05:55 PM (GMT)
No photoshop - but I have a 'painter' program... yeah, I could probably fix some of the color issues. I need to practice with the camera.
I'm glad you like the pair. They're platinum turquoise marble. I also wonder what I could get from them. A little black in the mix wouldn't be bad at all.
yeeviabettas - July 30, 2005 06:05 PM (GMT)
Breed it. :) They both will looks good in F2.:)
yeeviabettas - July 30, 2005 06:07 PM (GMT)
Oh yes. Don't forget to take your picture and post it in the member section. :) LOL  See how handsome you are. LOL
Seahorse - July 30, 2005 07:00 PM (GMT)
Loving the copper. I am always more partial to copper.
justhal - July 30, 2005 07:45 PM (GMT)
Okay - here's another from the same spawn. He's an oddball - metallic turquoise body with gray butterfly fins. You can't see the real body color from the photo... it's very turquoise. The fins are as gray as they look in the photo.
Ever see that???
He's still in the community tank, but from the look of his anal fin I think he started fighting - time for some Tupperware!
yeeviabettas - July 30, 2005 07:50 PM (GMT)
look like this? Oddball for sure. jay jay jay
justhal - July 30, 2005 09:48 PM (GMT)
No, his body is as turquoise as the marbles - it just didn't show up that way.
AND what do you mean??? He's cool - not real fancy, but on a good day he flares and is just shy of being a HM. More a SD - maybe a little better. He has a really big body in relation to his fins.
TacoFrano - July 31, 2005 01:15 AM (GMT)
awah they are soo pretty!!!!!!!!! its going to be justalmart lol
justhal - July 31, 2005 12:03 PM (GMT)
 NO!!! I hope it doesn't get to that point!
But it's a lot of work! I walk in from work and after I take care of my dogs, I try to figure out what 'group' of fish get water maintenance!!! All the jars, containers, and aquariums get to be too much!!! In addition to all the bettas, I have three large tanks of goldfish. I change about 80% of their water every four days! ...thank God for the Python!!!
I'm glad you like my babies, TacoFrano! ...thanks!

justhal - July 31, 2005 12:57 PM (GMT)
NOT A SNAKE!!! The water changing system! It attaches to your faucet and takes the water OUT of your aquarium - THEN push up the valve and it RE-FILLS your aquarium.
Never saw one??? Well, if you had to change that much water - and not just small tanks or jars OR Tupperware - you'd have one too. They're GREAT!!! I was lugging around buckets of water for MONTHS before I broke down and got one...
ladyjade1970 - July 31, 2005 02:12 PM (GMT)
Your bettas are really nice looking....like the future pair!!
As for the python....they are great systems...I had to put an extra piece of hose on mine...but I love mine!!!!!!
When you are doing water changes on a lot of tanks....saves a lot of time...
I tend to run my water that I am taking out thru a window or door though...It seems to give me a little more suction power for cleaning the gravel...but then I have a hose that is probably....40-50 feet long.... (I have tanks all over the place)
Definitly worth the money to invest in one!!!!
justhal - July 31, 2005 02:35 PM (GMT)
Yeah, they're great... but for small tanks - 10 gallons or less - and jars/beanie boxes/ any kind of Tupperware, the python is too much.
I just use the old bucket method with those. Besides, I think the bettas are more sensitive to even brief chlorine exposure. I add my water treatment as I'm re-filling the tank, and the goldfish are fine with it. BUT I don't think the bettas would fare so well...
semper fi - July 31, 2005 04:16 PM (GMT)
i want to see more of the coppers! they look great hal. good job!
justhal - July 31, 2005 09:12 PM (GMT)
Thanks, Maggie! The coppers are probably the best of the spawn. I would have gotten more photos but the few I took ate up the biggest part of the morning! ...and I had at least 3-4 hours of water changes to do that day.
I'll get more pics soon.
TacoFrano - July 31, 2005 09:19 PM (GMT)
o lord i thought you got goldfish to feed to the python lol thank goos
justhal - July 31, 2005 09:33 PM (GMT)
No, no, no - I love goldfish!!! I have three tanks full of them!!!
I think pythons would really rather eat mice or rats or rabbits... not fishes.
yeeviabettas - July 31, 2005 10:00 PM (GMT)
Justhal, I think you better give your gold fishs away and concentrating on betta. :)LOL
BettasRFriends - July 31, 2005 10:10 PM (GMT)
You're marbles are to die for man. Very beautiful females too.
DaSauce - July 31, 2005 10:34 PM (GMT)
justhal - August 1, 2005 12:16 AM (GMT)
Hey. thanks BettasRFriends! ...you too, DaSauce! They were a lot of work, but I really enjoyed raising them. At one point I didn't even think I had babies... you can ask Yeevia. I could barely see them. And to see them now, flaring at each other, and getting ready to breed my own home-bred fish is very rewarding.
Another really good thing is that these fish have been born and raised in my own water. I think that helps them be more vigorous. When my first Thai fish came over, it was a big adjustment for them to get used to our water here. But everyone I've sold fish to here in Michigan has had really good luck with them. It makes a big difference.
AND the best part - really the reason I bred - is that I get to keep the BEST ones!
Yeevia - What? give up my goldfish? I don't think so... but you wanted me to get rid of my dogs too!!! My next trip to Kansas I'm going to bring Iwan and tell him what you said about him... you've never had 203lbs of imported Italian Neapolitan Mastiff go ballistic on your ass I bet...
Goldfish have always been my 'first love' of fish. They're actually very delicate, and very hard to keep. I think they're harder to keep than discus, personally. But I don't really want to raise them - I don't have the space. To me, the goldfish are more like pets - like waddly puppies in water. The bettas are more like jewels... I think I can handle both.
Anyway, thanks again.
BettasRFriends - August 1, 2005 12:19 AM (GMT)
Goldfishare hard to keep? That's a first. I always thought they wer easy since I just throw them in the 30 gallons

Hahahaha  I want you to breed more betta especially the giant. LOL Hmm... I don't care about the dog since he don't live in the Tank! LOL  Come down to Topeka sometimes then! LOL Makesure you bring your giant betta pair for me. LOL :lmao: :lmao:

Hoooooonk honk  *waves hi to rocko* luckily I have a tank for him. :D
justhal - August 30, 2005 04:07 PM (GMT)
 Okay, I see the cat's out of the bag... I wasn't sure Saucy was going to tell you.
He's really a cool, cool fish - big, feisty, very active... you'll love him! I miss him already... :bye: He was in the tank with all the girls and thought he ruled the roost!
You better take good care of him... I'll PM both of you with some info on how I did certain things with all the fish, BUT you might want to get some frozen brine shrimp for these guys - I never feed pellets or flakes, and it might be a while before they get used to eating that.
Let me know when you get him...

Yeah, she decided to tell me last night, I think she was debating if she wanted to keep him or not  and he'll be very happy here, he'll have atleast 2 gallons all to himself :) and I will pick up some frozen brine, I do have some baby brine growing right now. :)
justhal - August 30, 2005 11:51 PM (GMT)
ALRIGHT!!! ...he's going to LOVE the brine shrimp! He's really into bloodworms too - and almost anything else!
He's really cool - I almost didn't want to put him in a bag. He's strong, very active, very vigorous. Some breeders would use him to keep some strength in their line. And you wait and see his color - I don't know if I've ever seen anything quite like him.
But you can't keep them all! And I appreciate you and Saucy taking Timmy - I hope you both enjoy Rocko!!!
Do me a favor and post some photos once he's settled in...
bettabelieveit - August 31, 2005 02:19 AM (GMT)
Well, I can provide you with Imbellis fry in a few months, if you'd want some. :)
justhal - August 31, 2005 02:26 AM (GMT)
Maybe, Jason - keep me posted on how they turn out. That could be interesting...
Saucy - August 31, 2005 05:01 AM (GMT)
Don't worry, Jason's definitely getting Rocko. I just adopted a fellow with a tumor, so I'm all stocked up again... lol. He's got room, unlike some people... lol.
Oh! And you'll be getting pics ASAP. I'm coming home after work just to see if I've gotten them! I'll have the camera in hand. :)
justhal - August 31, 2005 09:55 AM (GMT)
I really hope they make it today! I hate them spending more than 2 days in a bag.
I'm home today waiting for fish - my PKs from Dong and the Fancy Marbles from Tapong Betta should be here, as long as USPS doesn't screw it up AGAIN!
Gheesh... the last two Express packages I handled with them didn't make it on time. I always supported the US Mail, but they've blown it lately.
yeeviabettas - August 31, 2005 06:18 PM (GMT)
Got the new betta yet? LOL You need to :asskiss: To the post office and then they will always be on time for you. :) You better stop bitching :bitchslap: and :angry . LOL :brows:
justhal - August 31, 2005 09:22 PM (GMT)
Yeah, they're here - and look GREAT! That fancy PK is SOOOO nice! And Dong's fish are really beautiful! That blue boy has such great form...
Just for kicks, I checked the pH of the water in their bags - it was around 6.4! I couldn't believe it was so low! and everyone thinks I'm keeping mine low at 7.0!!! But I acclimated them very slowly, so they should be fine.
Thanks for asking, Yeeves. They look great! I'll post photos once they've settled in...

Just beautiful, and I LOVE that oddball.
