Title: African Dwarf Frog
Description: opinions

Hi.

my friend thought it'd be cute to give me an african drawf frog for my betta tank.

So I put it in a 2.5 tank (5 gal split bow) with a male betta.

I have a silk plant that barely pops out of the top of the tank

and made sure its all well covered.

I also added more hiding places.

Any other suggestons? I'll try to take a pic later when I get back from the store to get some frog food.

EDIT: its a heated tank

Sounds perfect.

The only suggestion I'd have is to make sure it's an ADF and not a clawed frog - just look at its feet and make sure there's webbing on them all.

The only other thing is just to keep an eye on mr. betta and make sure he don't nip mr/ms frog.

Aren't they cute little things?

Nothing really, if it is a dwarf, then they should get along fine.

But you have to be sure it is a dwarf. A dwarf will have webbed front and back feet, a clawed will only have webbed back feet. Clawed's get really huge, like golfball sized and bigger. Dwarf's will stay small. A Clawed will eat any fish it thinks might fit into it's mouth...dwarf's are usually pretty gentle and community compatible.

Hope these help! :) If you have time, there's also a mailing list with yahoogroups! called Froggy Friends, if you have questions that the above links didn't answer. :)

Awww, ADFs are so cute! Lots of fun to watch! I have a couple, but none with bettas at the moment.

I highly recommend this site for info: Flippers 'n Fins. Check out the FAQ and the care sheet. Very helpful message board as well.

One of the biggest concern with keeping ADFs and bettas together is making sure that the little froggers get enough to eat. They have poor vision, and hunt by smell, which makes it easy for an opportunistic betta to steal their lunch. You can try feeding by using an eye dropper or turkey baster to dangle food right in front of it, or by separating the betta in a breeder's net or something at dinner time. Another thing about food - mine will *not* eat anything but frozen foods (mostly bloodworms, sometimes brine shrimp). They totally ignore the HBH Frog and Tadpole bites that I got for them...

Make sure that if you need to medicate the betta that you separate him from the frog first. Frogs are very sensitive to medications. Aquarium salt is also not recommended. Also, make sure that your lid is tight, and all holes are covered, as they are at least as good as Bettas at jumping out of their tanks. With any caves or hiding places, make sure their aren't any holes that they can get stuck in, and that there is easy access for them to get out - hollow ornaments are dangerous unless they can get out the top - they aren't really smart, and can get stuck inside and unable to get to the surface for air.

That's all I can think of for now... Have fun with 'em!!

he's hiding in the back. I know his back feet is webbed, and I am 'sure' the front is webbed as well. when it comes out in the open more, I'll take a look.

If i find its not compatable, I have a 1 gal critter keeper to put him in. At least I'll have backup.

so far, my betta and the frog are ignoring eachother. The betta was curious at first, then after a few mins, he just swam away.

is it best to keep with a male, or a female betta.. or it doesnt matter?

The gender of the fish or the frog doesn't really matter in compatibilty. My frogs have lived with females and with males, and it hasn't made a difference in the gender of the Betta---just the temperament. Some Bettas won't tolerate them. Most seem to. At least, most of mine have at some point or other.

Good luck with the frog. They're very, very cute little things.

I have two boys that I can't keep an ADF with. They both went after the ADFs as soon as I put them in the tank. The rest of them just ignore the ADFs. If your betta has already noticed him and didn't go for him you're probably okay. I love them. They are so cute, but they really aren't all that bright. My male Rivet thought Booker's red tail was food and everytime Booker swam by the frog would jump for his tail. He never caught him thank goodness or I'd have been minus a frog. :bye:
