Title: Albino Fryeri

MyChemicalRomance - August 1, 2005 07:18 AM (GMT)
So. I have stripped another spawn from one of my female scienochromis fryeri...this time, she has decided to produce 5 albino babies (true albinos)
Last time I stripped her, I was shocked to even see that she had done this...she spawned 7 of them, but unfortunately none of them made it (looked too much like food to the other babies I guess) Only one of the 5 females that I have are making these albino babies (all of the parental fish are from the same 2 parents, including the male)

I have researched the albino strain on the net, and all I have come up with in pictures and articles are NOT true albinos, just orangey/yellow variations of a fryeri with black eyes...very beautiful fish I must say, but not COMPLETELY albino (eyes)

Has anyone here seen any pictures of a true albino fryeri?

White/cream body with red eyes?

I will post pics of them when they get a bit older, also, the ones that are not albino from the same spawn do not look normal either, they have black tips on their dorsal and pec fins, kind of a night and day scenario I am starting to assume....

Also, I will be trying to sell them, as I feel as though I may have something pretty rare here, so I would like some suggestion as to what everyone thinks they are worth.

Thanks for looking and reading...I will post a pic of the first spawn fish, even though they are not around anymore.

P.S. The fish in my signature is the father of the father of the father of the babies.

This may be stating what you already know, but seems only your one female has the recessive gene for albinism. If you're real lucky you'll get a mix of boys & girls. Put them in a tank by themselves & let them breed. You should get a high % of albino's in the spawn as they'll all carry the recessive gene. Then start selling.

Congrat's by the way!

That was the plan, to breed them, but I don't really know what I will end up with after I spawn albino with albino....guess I will find out in about 6 months.... :P
Have bred so many cichlids, but not albinos before...wish me luck!

Oh and thank you. :D

Anything albino is cool! Good work matey! :starwars:

My guess is that your fish have been crossed sometime in the past especially if the non albino fry do not look right and have differnt markings.
I'd try and find out a bit of history on them before you try selling them. The albino gene does not just mysteriously appear ;)

Chuck :)

Well, I have had 4 generations of them already, these are kids of kids of kids, so I am pretty sure they are pure, considering I have never seen albinos from any of the parent or g-parents. Thanks for responding though. :)

Oh, and they all look the same...the albinos are all cream with white stripes and orange eyes and the non- albinos are all the same normal looking bodies with black tips on all of their fins. ;)

Soooo cute...! Any new pics?

MyChemicalRomance - August 8, 2005 08:31 AM (GMT)
Mango, I just posted some....

...and I may have figured out how I got them in the first place.... from this article, it says....

" By the way, to the best of our knowledge, all albino forms of African cichlid species in quantity are the result of line breeding. Obviously, individual albinos can and do occur in nature. And the "albino" gene is required for the production of the line-bred specimens. We continue to see albinos called "hybrids" by the uninformed. Sometimes we are chastised for selling these "hybrids"."

Which, of course I have done for the last few years with the blues...I don't know if I have pics of all hte males or not, but I will do my best to show pics of the family tree that I have owned...should be pics of 4 males total...

Here is my first male(Billy)....was before I had a digicam, so please excuse the quality...

cool snap shot seeing how active those guys are

Damn...super cool....have any of your male albinos reached breeding age yet? Cross him back with his mother....you should get a higher yeild of albinos...That may also "stabalize" it...

somthin'sfishy - February 4, 2006 11:30 PM (GMT)
Damn, you guys are lucky I can't even get my fryeri to breed. I have 3 males, and 3 or 4 female. 1 male is full grown, 2 females also. Any suggestions?

Any suggestions?

...a little Barry White...some candles...a bearskin rug and a fireplace.....

...really though, the best way to encourage breeding is to give them clean water and a good varied diet....some people also link water changes to spawing as it may reproduce a natural trigger like season rainfall (after a rainfall is good for raising young as their is often more nutrients available at the bottom of the food web that work their way up the trophic ladder....)

If I really want my fish to breed...I will drop the water level so that the filter is actually dumping water into the tank and creating the rainfall sound, drop the temp with a water change and feed with bloodworms...usually works right away.
