Title: Blue Skunk ill
Description: help?

thatdarndragon - August 5, 2005 03:19 AM (GMT)
Hi.

My delta is sick. He was fine this morning when i went to work, and now he's obviously sick.

his fins are shredded, and he has some cottony stuff hanging from his fins.

He has a small bit of color loss, not much..

breathing alittle heavy, and hanging at the top of the tank.

1 gal tank, water is 78 and everything's good. I did a full water change when I noticed him sick.

I want to try to get him treated before I go away for a week (which is monday)

help?

You'll want to leave him with someone that can do daily WCs. You'll want to find a powerful anti-fungus medication to treat him with as well. I DO NOT reccomend Jungle. It's not strong enough in my opinion. It's never cured a nasty case of fungus for me. Maybe try Methelyn Blue (sp?).

Edit: Could I had had any more typos?

nevermind, finally found it. its a fungal infection, columaris (spelling?)

so Im treating with Jungle's Fungus Eliminator.

I hope he gets better by monday!! I'd hate to leave a sick betta behind with someone who does not know how to medicate or change waters. She's just feeding and turning on/off the lights for me while Im gone

Jungle is the only thing I have on hand. its almost midnight and all stores are closed.

It definately sounds like columnaris, a bacterial infection that is often called "fungus". This disease thrives in warm water, so if possible, turn the temperature down to 76. Also, adding salt can help in fighting this bacteria. You will definately need a strong antibiotic to fight this thing. Some recomended ones are Kanamycin, Tetracycline, and Maracyn 1 combined with maracyn 2.

Here is an article with some good information. http://www.flippersandfins.net/flexibacter.htm

he died :(

Oh no!
I'm sorry to hear he's gone. =(
Columnaris is EVIL. I've dealt with it several times, and luckily I have had the meds on hand that it takes to kick it.

Should you happen to run across it again, Stress coat, low temps (low 70's) and maracyn (NOT maracyn2) will do the trick. If you notice actual fungus on his body, you will also need to treat with maroxy.

It's nasty stuff and sneaks up fast. Luckily each time I've been faced with it I caught it very early.

Yeah, it's really nasty and can be very hard to treat because it appears so fast and then before you know it the fish is gone. I'm so sorry you lost him. :rip:

thanks.

I got some extra medicine just in case. It did happen so fast.. mustive been within 3 hours he got that fungus, and gone overnight. no time to try to cure him :(
