Title: Update on fin problems and new question

gufyduck - August 9, 2005 05:05 AM (GMT)
Five days ago, three of my guys had suspected fin rot. One I am very happy with his progress. The other two I've stll got questions about... (ammonia and nitrites are both zero in their divided tank) Because there were three guys that were having problems, I treated the tank with Maracyn 2, which the box says treats finrot and sepcemia (suspected in one guy), and today was their last dose. I have also added salt in the water.

Crash is white, and five days ago, I noticed his tail was shreaded and was also bright red, like almost bloody looking. Yesterday, it looked alot better and it almost seemed that the fins had fused back together. The red was also almost totally gone. Today, one of the rays in his tail is back to being bloody and his fins are shreaded again. What should I do for him?

Blaze is my other guy, and there was some question of whether he was biting his tail, having issues wiht the filter, or if it was finrot. I have finally gotten a decent picture of him, so I will let that do the talking. user posted image Any imput on Blaze?

i just hope to GOD that you don't get what I have. It is a royal pain in the ass. It started with a divided tank, One had finrot when I put him in there (jenga-you naughty boy! And now you're the on;y survivor) because I thought it would't spread. Well, a couple days later, EVERYONE had it. Then came the brown crap, like, a slimy membraney film that was like, stringy in places. Clogged up the filter and made it so I couldnt see to the back of the tank. Random. Then, came the laying down on their sides, looking dead, perking up, eating, and going back to lay down again. On the last day or so they just lay there, and don't get up really at all. Lost two fish to this and I'm still baffled. Good luck, for a while don't go crazy on meds, I did and all it did was cost me up the wazoo, put me through hell and actually end up exascerbating the problem. Just try clean warm water and salt

I hope it doesn't go to that. I've got some brown crap all over the dividers and plants. I took them out and boiled everything today when I was cleaning the tank. Right now everyone just has salt and melafix. I'm gonna be getting some IAL soon, so I will use that once I get it.

I did isolate Crash (I finally got decent pix today, they are below) just becuause of the blood at the bottom of his fins. I did get a few good pictures of him earlier today. The red on his fins have me worried.

Have you ever heard of a betta biting his bottom fin? That is partially why I am so worried about Blaze (blue guy above).

Oh yes... tail-biting is EVIL. You're going to see fin rot a lot more on a white fish. I'd maybe suggest getting a filter for your 10-gallon. Add some salt and you should be good. It will keep your water cleaner and help the fin rot stay away better.

The 10 gal divided tank is actually fully cycled. I just yanked the white guy out yesterday back into a 1 gal because the red on the edges of his fins were really bothering me. I will probably be doing water changes every other day till he is back to his old self.

Would the stress of seeing other bettas add to the tail biting?

BettaMomma - August 11, 2005 11:44 PM (GMT)
My opinion on the situation - the tail biting is because they can see each other.
I agree w/Saucy to the point of seeing the redness and irritation on the white fish much easier than on colored fish. But I also think in addition to seeing each other, they're having issues with the noise and current caused by the filter in there.

I had the EXACT same issues when I had my 2 boys together in a divided 10 g tank. They ALWAYS had fin issues - biting, rot, etc. - I took them out and got them each into their own 2.5g and their fins are beautiful once again.

So - I have a feeling that the combination of seeing each other, being in with the filter of a current and the ups and downs of ammonia, regardless of how often you do water changes.

Waht did my major blurb just say? lol
Divided 10g tanks can be really stressful for bettas.
SEe how they do in their own tanks and base your next steps from there.
I ended up giving away my 10G tank to Saucy because it just wasn't working as a divided tank at my house with the boys in it.

I think you're right BettaMomma. Crash (white guy) has been out of the divided tank for two or three days now. His fins are looking alot better, and the red is almost gone, while Jewel (no prior fin problems) is beginnint to bite his tail. I guess I've got to go buy some more 1 gal tanks + heaters.
