Hi there everyone, im new to this site, ive kept fish for quite a while, mainly goldfish. i got this 5 gallon tank with a fluval 2 plus(filters aquariums up to 25 gals) and with flourecent lighting. i was wondering if i could start a tropical tank but then im not sure which fish are compatible and how many is the maximum number of fish i ca keep in the 5 gal. thankyou very much and i hope for your reply! :woo:

5 gallon doesn't offer much. Need a 10 at least, 20 better. 30 good. etc. Can't really think of much for a 5 besides cories, bettas or dwarf puffers but puffers are mean and not a community fish.

In addition to the above, a trio of male guppies would be okay in a 5g, as would cherry barbs.

i keep a 5-5.5 UK gallon.
generally internal filters take up a bit of space...
how about a school of small blue-eyed rainbows with a few guppies?
(that's what i have)

A school is 6 or more, but most schooling fish need far more room than 5 gallons. How about.... a trio of pygmy cories and a trio of cherry barbs (1m, 2fm)?

i have 5 blue-eyed rainbows who don't get bigger than 3 cm
a school is usually 6+ but i find that 5 also works

If you can find them, I recommend bridget rasboras. They are really small, about 2/3 inch and slimmer than neons. You could probably get away with 6-7 of those, with live plants, you could push 8-10, but you have to be really diligent with water changes, and add only a few at a time. They are not super colorful, but I find that they get a really pretty orange wash to their basic black stripe/beige background when well-cared for. They are hardy, at least the ones I have kept. They like to take trips to see what power filters look like inside, so a stocking or a fishnet around your filter intake tube is a must. :P
It would be easier to divide the tank in two and put two bettas in it, as bridget rasboras are really hard to find. I started with three and intended to build a large school in my 15g, but the LFS never carried them again, so I had to stock the tank with something else. They're still around though, and it's been over 2 years. They are my three oldtimers.

You could put in a dwarf puffer, or a couple guppies (I'd say 3-4 males would be fine, they like groups) or a male betta with a snail and/or frog would do just fine.

male bettas will attack frogs! definately dwarf african ones.

imo...the best communty fish are! harlequin tetras, rummy nose tetras, rainbows, panda corydoras, bn, silvers sharks, silver dollars...but really the choice is urs! is it gonna be a heavy planted tank ?

Plants and Endlers (males, lots of color and without females you won't get overrun)
