Title: Green HM Spawn
Jess - August 29, 2005 12:04 PM (GMT)
Hey,
Thought i'd put a thread up about my current spawn. Im using my green marble HM and the masked green and black BF female from the same spawn. I should hopefully get some nice and interesteing fry from them :)
After a bit of trouble with the spawning, with first the male being VERY aggressive and then the female not dropping any eggs they finally sorted themselves out. I think its due to inexperience (they're both only about 4 months old and never been spawned) but they got on with it eventually
Anyway, here's the pair
Female:

Male:

And some spawning pics..
Embraces :D

Male waiting for female to wake up lol

And some pics of dad and fry taken this morning :D

MCR - if YOU decide to breed we'll probably pass on seeing the photos.
Vip doesn't allow porn here anyway.
However - if you breed your FISH, photos would be awesome!
Jess, GORGEOUS fish you have there - I'll be anxiously waiting to see some of the babes when they get a wee bit bigger! :)
Congrats!

Thanks everyone :D I'll definately update this thread when something interesting happens.
Im currently trying to spawn my melano male HM and steel blue female HM as well. Im being brave and trying two spawns at the same time this time! But the male doesn't seem to have any clue what he's doing so will have to wait and see whats happening with that. If they sort themselves out i shall make another thread for them :D

What simply gorgeous pictures! I will have to try to take some decent ones of my bettas too. What are you feeding the fry so far?

Im not actually feeding the fry anything. They've only just reached the free swimming stage so they shouldn't need feeding for a few days. But i will be feeding them BBS and i may try liquifry but last time it just made my tank really dirty

A tip Yeevia gave me when I first had to feed the babies: hard-boiled egg yolk. Boil the egg, take the yolk out and break it up a little. Then stick it in the freezer.
When you're ready to feed, take a very small piece (like the end of your fingernail) and dissolve it in a little bit of tank water. Take an eye-dropper and squirt a little here and there in the tank.
It worked great for me! I fed it maybe a week to ten days, until they were ready for BBS.
Try it! Liquifry is crap...

i had heard great things about egg yolk, but never tried it. messed around with the microworm cultures and bbs cultures. my friend william aka siamcrowntail told me to try it. so with this spawn i did. i have seen a great difference in the development of the fry with the egg vs cultures. the fry are larger and developed quicker.
when the spawn was 2 weeks old, he gave me his "recipe" for the food he feeds after the egg yolk. it's a liver and egg yolk food that he feeds in liquid form to fry from 2 weeks to about jarring size. after that, he feeds it to them in a ball form from then on. it's really quite easy to make and the fry love it! the spawn is now 3 weeks old and i can already see slight difference in colors. some are a more opaque white and some are a grey blue color.
one of the other problems that it solved was switching the fry from culture to culture and keeping the cultures alive. also has vitamins added to it to help with growth and development.
Recipe
take one egg and boil for 10 minutes. take a piece of liver (i use calf liver) about the size of an egg yolk and when the egg has boiled for 7 minutes, drop in the liver and complete the cook time. put the liver and egg yolk in a blender with a bit of tank water, vitamin c and vitamin d. puree the mixture. pour the liquid into a cup and feed fry with an eye dropper in a few hot spots in the tank. the remainder can be stored in the fridge for about 4 days.
for adult fry follow the above directions but omit the tank water. once blended scrape out the mixture into a bowl. pack the mixture into a ball and to feed adult fish break of a small peice, roll into a ball and put in tank. the ball will float and fish will nibble at it.

Oh wow, thanks for that info, thats great! :D
I had heard about feeding egg yolk but wasn't sure exactly how you go about doing it.. Can they eat that right away then?
semper fi - August 31, 2005 12:14 PM (GMT)
i start feeding it to them 4 days after the first ones have hatched. i switched to the egg and liver at about the 10-14 day mark.

Gorgeous fish!!! :brows: Gotta love marbles... a surprise with every batch!
Yep.... they can eat egg yolk right from the get go. Vinegar eels are such a pain. Even with the 8 million "new and improved" means of harvesting. Microworms & walter worms... :barf1: They REEK!!!
