Title: mudskipper

k-noh - August 30, 2005 01:32 AM (GMT)
i have a 40gallon with a turtle i'm gonna take out.
i was thinking of 4mud skippers, 4 fiddlers, and 2 archer fish to go in there,
it's only gonna be filled up to 7inches from the bottom, so they'll have 10gallons of water, is this ok for temporary?
what should i feed them?
pinhead crickets? i know the archers will eat it but will the mudskippers?
how about the fiddler?

I wouldn't put mudskippers with fiddler crabs. The archers would do fine in brackish setups, but I think they would require more water. I have a mudskipper and he eats small crickets. He also eats brineshrimp when hes under water, but most skippers don't eat underwater. They should have multiple above-water perches. They are territorail, but enjoy each other's company, so make sure each fish has its own perch. They like humid conditions, so I would leave the water at a high 79 or 80*F. Any other questions or things I forgot to mention?

He eats crickets??? Dude post some pictures of this or a video please!

k-noh - August 30, 2005 03:00 PM (GMT)
well i'll take the archers out because i'm getting two more turtles and they need a 40, and i'll put 4 skippers, 4 fiddlers, and a molly, for the water area
so how do they eat them? do they find them on the water, or on the land? send us a video!

I've been trying to upload videos to a free mediahosting site, but they both didn't work. Do you guys know a site that works?

Anyway, he gets on the edge of the rock with about half his body in the water and waits for the crickets to come close enough. Then, he jumps and grabs them, and jumps back in the water. This is when hes not that hungry. Lately, hes gotten more comfortable, and just eats them one after another on the rock. They have to be small, though, because hes scared of the bigger crickets.

Oh, they can also eat millworms, but if you feed them this, you have to be sure the worms are dead, because they can chew through the mudskippers stomach if they are still alive.

Here is the video of my mudskipper eating. I filmed it today for you guys.

k-noh,
Are you thinking of putting the skippers in with the turtles? If so be warned, shortly after my daughter cought her turtle she put a frog in with it for company, it did fine for a couple of days and I made her turn the frog loose because she wouldn't catch it food. A week later she put another frog in with it and in the time it took for her to go to the restroom the frog was lunch.

k-noh - August 31, 2005 02:41 AM (GMT)
no, i'm not putting my turtles in with mudskippers, look at my signiture, it will show what i'm gonna do

k-noh - August 31, 2005 02:44 AM (GMT)
wow , nice video,
there so active, so fast at catching!
by the way what are those platforms that the mudskipper was one?are they cheap? will they work for fiddler as well?

dtroup2 - August 31, 2005 02:47 AM (GMT)
Oh, Ok, I should have looked closer.

stomachfluid cool video!

stomachfluid - August 31, 2005 02:53 AM (GMT)
Yeah. He is fast. Its still crazy to think tht this animal is a fish. Anyway, the platform is a turtle platform that sticks to the edge with suction cups and floats. I think it ran my sis about 6 bucks. She bought it for her ADF, but it didn't fit her tank. Not that the ADF would have used it.

ok
thanks
so will it work for fiddler crabs? will they be able to get up there

stomachfluid - August 31, 2005 03:41 AM (GMT)
I don't think they would make it up there. Maybe a piece of driftwood, or a rock would be good for the crabs. I have a couple of rocks that the skipper perches on too.

k-noh - August 31, 2005 04:06 AM (GMT)
how about this, water filled up to 6"
1/4 inch of fine gravel, and one piece of branch driftwood sticking out and a sponge filter
is this ok?

One inch? Wow. I got a 2 1/2 inch one for 10 bucks in Chinatown. You have to understand that these are very rare, and aquiring rare fish is going to cost you. This is a very good price for mudskippers, but know that they will grow to 4 or 5 inches eventually. Slowly, but eventually.

k-noh - August 31, 2005 04:36 AM (GMT)
are they really that rare? wow
better get them fast before they run out, i'll ask if they keep on restocking on these "fish"
so what else could live with them? frogs? newts? salamanders?
might not get crabs, cause i'm afraid it's gonna pinch them. but is it still ok? What fish are compatible with them?

The amphibians you mentioned might give off toxins deadly to fish, and I don't recommend them for any tanks. Think hardy and brackish. I would go with glass fish. I have mine with some Gambusia Affinis and African Dwarf Frogs. I know that sounds very contradicting to what I said, but I keep up on water changes, so I'm ok. Mollies would be fine. You could do puffers, but I think they would be too aggressive. Most hobbyists who have kept Mudskippers would advise you to keep them in a species tank.

k-noh - August 31, 2005 12:37 PM (GMT)
ok thanks, after all this
i'm gonna do this
2 mudskippers
1 Archer fish
2 fiddler crabs

1/4inch sand
lots of rocks stacked to form a bit of land
1 sponge filter
all in a ten gallon
i'll move this all when the mudskippers and archers get little bigger to a 40 gallon.

thanks stomachfluid

Cool. See how it works out for you. If I were you, I would watch that aquarium like a hawk for about the first wek or so, to make sure everything goes smoothly. Oh, and I would still advise against the crabs. Please make sure each skipper has a perch, because they are territorial, and will fight if they don't have their own space.

k-noh - September 10, 2005 12:55 AM (GMT)
argh i was gonna go to the petstore today to get it but they just ran out
there gonna restock in 2weeks to 2 months
gosh i should have bought it earlier
