Title: my sump
Salt freak - April 5, 2005 09:19 PM (GMT)
ok i'm working on my sump for my tank know since the main tank is not drilled and is tempered i have to use a overflow box. I plan on using filter floss bio-sponge balls. for the first part of the filter. The second part I plan on using macro algeas probaly calurpa* and live sand for the return i plan on using a mag drive 5 pump.

heres an overview of the sump

heres were my filter floss is going and the last couple of sections is were biological media is going and air diffuser.

heres were my macro algea is going. and pump is going to be fixed on that stand.

my plumbing for it this is only the drain as I dont want to plumb the second part until I get the pump in.

my DIY overflow box just modified a box filter. and put a bulk head were the pump is suppose to go.

That looks pretty good Saltfreak . The only suggestion I would make is to ditch the caulerpa and use Chaeto macro-algae instead. Chaeto has a number of advantages over other macros. If you got Tangs then Red gracileria(sp?) is even better! These release less toxins into the water waging "chemical warefare against your corals. They dont have "hold fast" that make them near impossible to control like other macros once they get a good foot hold in the tank. The two are far less likely to "melt down" on you too like Caulerpa. Just something to consider....

Given the set up of this forum I think this is about as appropriate a folder to post this thread in as any.
By the way, I like the sump design. Most of the ones I build with acrylic for others are very simular in design. I would like to get more detailed pics and a run down on your over flow box though...that looks kinda trick!

Well i modified the whisper 30 by cutting out a larger gap for the water to go through between the moter and the filter housing as not enough water was flowing through.
Is there anything in particular you want me to take a picture of closely and explain.
And it wasn't to bad tricky.

What sized tank will this be in? And what will be kept in it?
Mag 5's are fairly week pumps, so if you are keeping corals that need a lot of current (I believe SPS does), make sure you have some other powerheads on there.

This will be on a 30 gallon. And mag drive 5 pump five hundred gallons per hour but with a four foot head on it it pumps 300 gallons per hour. which means I will have a 10 times turnover rate on htat tank which is more than enough plus I have two powerheads in the tank that are rated for 270 GPH a piece so that gives me about 30 times turnover rate. wich is probaly too much.
