Title: I am THE biggest pushover
Description: for small critters
BettaMomma - August 30, 2005 06:35 PM (GMT)
Six was feeling under the weather and is now on the mend, so to pamper him a little bit I went and bought him a bunch of cabomba last week to lounge around in.
As I was sitting here yesterday IMing with Saucy, I noticed that a teeny little snail started crawling up the back of his tank. Apparently it hitched a ride in on the plants, EVEN though I soaked them in a salt dip. But WHATEVER.
So anyway, I couldn't just do away with him so I went out and got him a 1g purple minibow at lunch, complete with his very own little one-armed Zeus statue, a plastic plant that will double for him as a jungle gym, and purple and clear mini flat marbles. And I gave him 2 flat river rocks to crawl around on so he has some flat surfaces to be horizontal on. and for the record, yes I know this tank will get too small for him, but he's about the size of a VERY TINY mechanical pencil eraser so he's got room to grow...
He's a super cutie little apple snail and MAN does he move.
And NO no pics of him - I firstly don't want to draw attention to the fact that I'm back to 3 tanks on my desk, and secondly I don't want to draw any more attention to the fact that I'm nuts by photographing my snail that's so small you can't see anyway.
I thought I'd tell you all cuz I know you'd understand.
:drunk:

Are you sure its an apple snail and not one of the pesty snails that stay weenie?
icecrystal - August 30, 2005 06:47 PM (GMT)
Why am I not surprised?!
You crazy lady. Buying a snail it's own tank.
BettaMomma - August 30, 2005 07:10 PM (GMT)
Yep, it's an apple snail.
By the way, his name is Zeus.
Named after the Zeus statue in his tank that he LOVES to hang on.
It's so funny when he crawls up his arm, across his head, down his nose, and then down his beard and out his other arm over to the plant.
I wish snails had an odometer - i'm sure they really rack up the miles over time.
and I am going to get another 1g minibow for Plankton (the other snail I accidentally wound up with) at home. So :eatit:

If you name it, you can give it it's own tank. Them's the rules right? LOL.
I liked my apple snails a lot. Looking forward to more sometime soon.

I fully understand. I lost Wink, Goldie and Snail to our water problems a while back and since my plec, Cactus Jack, sucked Baby Snail right out of his shell, I haven't had much luck with them lately. Now you've made me sad. Maybe I'll stop and get a snail on the way home today. :jk:

You got that right! *hi five*
eudie - did you get one?!?!
dtroup2 - August 31, 2005 02:55 AM (GMT)
How come you get the good snails as hitchhikers and I got stuck with lil pond snails?? Not fair, but they are not my problem anymore, they went with the tank when I sold it.
OrkyBetta - August 31, 2005 04:09 AM (GMT)
Oh bettamomma. I wish I had enough money for a minibow, let alone for a snail. But I understand. I would probably do something simaler.
Photochick - August 31, 2005 08:18 AM (GMT)
 You are just too funny. I have a tank full of snails again, that I can't get rid of, so they are just going all over. Any of you that read this are welcome to them hehehe
eudielynn - August 31, 2005 11:54 AM (GMT)
BettaMomma - or should I say BettaGoddess?
No, I didn't stop on the way home. Hubby wasn't feeling too good and we got hit with the rains from Katrina so I decided it was best to get home. I still need to get to the LFS over the weekend for some cambomba so I'm going to pick up at least two for the big tank then. Mellina is fascinated by the frogs and ghost shrimp. She will just hang in the water staring at them, but never tries to nip them. She'll love the snails I'm sure.
BettaMomma - August 31, 2005 03:14 PM (GMT)
dtroup - NICE WORK! lol They got a bonus when you sold them the tank. They should have paid extra! Or wait, maybe you should have given them a discount for taking them? hehehehehe!
Orky - save up $14.44 and you can get a sweet little 1g minibow. They're so cute!
You can spend another $1.96 and get a bag of flat marbles - that's enough for tanks that size :). Or - tell people you want one for a birthday present! They'd make AWESOME bday gifts and are exactly the right price range :)
Photo - you should make them a little palace - make all sorts of junglegym type of stuff. They love that kind of thing.
eudie - ooooh, hope the hubby's feeling better today. Maybe new betta would make him feel better :) Anyway, I hope he's getting along better now that he's got such a great nurse at home taking care of him ;)
I haven't taken the step yet to putting a snail back in with any of my fish, but I think very soon that Mr. Plankton will be movin on up into the girly community tank. I'm afraid that the little snots I got from Yeev will eat him now if I put him in there - or at least his big long feelers. I need to let him grow a little bit more. Then I'll have another 1/2 gallon freed up. HMMMMMM... Besides I'm getting kind of tired of changing out his water EVERY single day. He's a total poo factory!!! Jeez!
eudielynn - August 31, 2005 04:43 PM (GMT)
Yeah, the poo is the one thing I don't miss with my snails. Hubby is doing much better today, but alas, he isn't the betta lover I am so I doubt they would be theraputic to him. However, he does love the snails - - - hey, I could get him a snail, put it in a tank and give it to him. Then one day a betta could magically appear in with the snail - - - :omg:
BettaMomma - August 31, 2005 04:51 PM (GMT)
Waht a FABULOUS idea.
You could get a plant, and tell him that the betta "hitched a ride" in on the plant.
Give it a try and let me know how that works. I might have to give that a try at my house too!!
I'm so glad he's feeling better. It must be such a total relief for you and him to have that behind you now. Tell him I said hello :)
eudielynn - August 31, 2005 04:55 PM (GMT)
Will do. He told me today that it was time I started smiling again. Guess I've not been real good at hiding my feelings lately.
Hey! The hitching a ride on the plant part was how we got Baby Snail, I'm sure he'll believe that!!!!

:brows: |
Hey, some sort of baby albino African cichlid hitched a ride in with a bag of "feeder" guppies to my house once, so it could happen!
He got returned to the LFS, needless to say, and they had no idea how he got in with the guppies.
BettaMomma, I've got three tanks full of trumpet snails for ya... my 10 gallon community has snail substrate
Saucy - September 1, 2005 03:36 AM (GMT)
Yeah, that's why I like apple snails. They are hermaphrodites... so no getting millions of little snails unless you have a male AND a female. It's great. I'm pretty sure it's an apple snail. It's got a round shell like one, but being soooo teeny, it's pretty hard to tell. Most places don't sell snails that AREN'T apple snails. Yeah... Inca Snails, Ivory Snails, Mystery Snails = Apple Snails. And if you got your plants at PetSmart like I'm thinking you did, then I'm 99% sure it's an apple snail.
Orky, want me to send you a snail? I have two in my 20-gallon and Lori FINALLY laid eggs again. I tossed them, but I figure if I have enough interest in getting really cheap snails, then I'll let them grow up. They're really cheap at Petco and places, though. Less than $2 usually. And sometimes there are PALS discounts on snails that make them like $.99!! Gee, you can't tell I work there, can you?
Styx - September 1, 2005 05:34 AM (GMT)
XD That's okay BM, I got a tiny orange ramshorn snail I think it pretty damn cute.
