Title: African butterfly fish
Description: Pantodon buchholzi

Dwarfs - August 31, 2005 03:41 AM (GMT)
Max size: 4"
Minimum tank size: 15g
Level: Surface dweller
Feeding: FLOATING FOOD ONLY: Live insects, freeze dried foods, possibly flakes or sticks.
Water: Neutral pH, 78 degrees

Comments: A very unique fish, and an ambush predator. These fish will eat other surface dwellers that can fit in their large mouths, and they can also gouge out the eyes of larger fish (although it is uncommon). Don't keep them with nippy fish, because the ABF has long fins and modified ventral fins that can be damaged by biters. They are also accomplished jumpers, so your tank will need to be well covered so they cant jump out. ABFs are similar to arowanas(Both are bony tongued fish, so they are related)

Okay a few more things to add from myself, these fish can be sexed very easilly, females are larger and have a straight anal fin where as males have an indented fin and are physically smaller.

These guys are territorial and it should be one fish for 15gal and then another per additional 10 gal

AFBs are excellent jumpers and should be kept in a tank with a sturdy lid as they can easilly knock flimsy lids off, they are capable of jumping up to 3foot to grab bugs etc.

Diet should be surface floating sticks and meaty foods, either crickets are small surface dwelling fish like danios as an occasional treat!

relatively easy to breed a pair should be chosen and left to their own devices for a while in a tank to themselves, they spawn over a few days and lay eggs which float on the sufrace. Youngsters cant swim down for food so daphnia (which will swim up now and then) and finely crushed flakes are about the only diet for them. The parents should be removed due to their predatory nature
