Title: Boyfriend Rescued a Betta
Description: dial-up warning

icecrystal - August 31, 2005 02:53 PM (GMT)
My boyfriend recently started to become interested in fish, mostly because of the three bettas I had in my room.
Actually, I blame it on Fiyero.

They're in love.

So Chris wanted his own fish. Which worked out well, cos my mom had a 5 gallon tank that was going into a garage sale, so she sold it to him instead. I gave him my black sand, and bought him some plants. All we had to do was find a fish.

Well.

Chris wanted a pretty one like Fiyero. But AquaTerra doesn't have anymore and they don't know when they'll get them in. I called around the Niagara Region but the closest store that has fancy bettas was Big Al's in Hamilton, with crowntails.

Soo last night we went to WalMart to get a filter for the tank, and I nudged him over to their bettas. I was getting 6 black phantom tetras [WalMart treats their fish better than one of the pet stores here] to start my 34g, and I thought maybe he'd find a betta he'd like.

First thing out of his mouth -- "Why the hell are they in such tiny cups?!" So I explained to him how WalMart keeps them that way because 'that's all they need.'

"So how long do they stay in there?"
Until someone buys them and gives them a home..

We wandered the pet department for a bit, and then back into that aisle to pick out his filter.
He went straight for the bettas, picking up each cup in turn and checking them out. Finally he walked over to me to get his filter, carrying a betta.

"I want to rescue this one." ...Yeah, if I wasn't in love with him already, that would've done it right there. I just kinda looked at him and asked about his pretty betta I was trying to order for him, and he was like "Nuh-uh.. lots of people will want to give those a home, but no one will want to buy these guys cos their cups are nasty. So I'm rescuing this one. Kinda like Jennifer does."

see what kind of influence you have, lady? lol he was upset that you weren't on last night cos he wanted to tell you

Then he fell in love with the little dwarf frogs, so we had to get one of those two.
Neither of his pets have names yet, but I'm camera happy so we have lots of pictures of them.

Tank from start to finish:

AWESOME!!! :woo:

That's seriously totally awesome. Almost made me wanna cry too.

And um, psst - he's making the rest of us look bad - that tank is one sweet ass tank for a betta. Ours are going to be jealous!!

Yay!!!

Wish he'd talk to the hubby. He just won't budge on anymore tanks at home and I've only got 2 there! :angry

But congrats on your b/f's new guy. And he'll love the frog, they are so cute. You'll have to let us know the names.

icecrystal - August 31, 2005 03:18 PM (GMT)
It was the only tank I could get cheap for him :P He's going to get another frog or two for it though, he's just being patient and waiting to see how this one and the betta could get along.

And it looks good cos he made me aquascape it. ;) If he did it, it'd be a mess!

Eudie, show your hubby that boys can like fish too. :D Chris is so in love with my 34g now, it's insane.

That tank, fish, and frog look awesome!!
I have a 5 gal that looks just like that :) It's 'retired' for now....my bf got it for me and I had kept goldies in it...*shame on me* and since all of them passed, I have sanitized it, and am letting it sit for now in my closet. I plan on using it again some day, but for now...I'm resting it :P

Awesome story! I love that last pic of the froggy best, hehe. The betta is gorgeous too
My dwarf puffers live in a 5 gallon just like that :D

What a sweetie! It's awesome when your boyfriend can share the betta love with you. Not that I know anything about that... *looks away innocently* Actually, it's his fault that I'm into bettas.

NICE AQUASCAPING!! I wish the plants never moved, you know? It looks good the first day, then it dies... lol.

icecrystal - September 1, 2005 02:27 PM (GMT)
Haha, I hope the plants don't die.. that'd make me very sad. :(

It gets better -- last night we were talking about what I was going to put in my 34g, and we'd just gotten home from playing bingo. That's right.. bingo  It's a Marineland employee [or in my case, former employee] thing.. We get together and play bingo every once in a while.
Chris was mad that he didn't win because he was one square away from a $1000 jackpot, and he told me after that he wanted to win it and buy a bunch of little tanks and rescue all the bettas from WalMart, because he couldn't stand seeing them in little cups.

If that's not one of the cutest things I've ever heard, I don't know what is.

BettaMomma - September 1, 2005 02:34 PM (GMT)
:pft: He's a totally hopeless case now. I LOVE IT!

heheheheheheh!

icecrystal - September 1, 2005 03:06 PM (GMT)
LOL He figured you would.. I told him he was going to end up as bad as you! :P

BettaMomma - September 1, 2005 09:01 PM (GMT)
 Let's hope it doesn't get that bad, for your sake!
heh heh

eudielynn - September 2, 2005 01:18 PM (GMT)
Poor guy, didn't you tell him you can't stop with just one?

icecrystal - September 2, 2005 02:25 PM (GMT)
He wants more.. I told him when he started kicking in money for my water bill and he found a space for them in my room [there seriously isn't any room], then he could have more.

TacoFrano - September 2, 2005 06:54 PM (GMT)
what did you usde at the bottom of your tank?

OrkyBetta - September 4, 2005 02:29 AM (GMT)
Where did you find THAT one? All of my friends and family think I am out of my mind. Its so cool someone shares the love of fish with you.

Lol, congrats. But watch out before you both go mad together!

icecrystal - September 4, 2005 02:40 PM (GMT)
TF: It's Estes Black Marine Sand, really cheap at Big Al's.. but basically a no name version of Tahitian Moon Sand.

Orky, I found him at Marineland. He played King Waldorf when I was the jester for the show, so we met that way..

It gets worse.
We got another one yesterday.

BettaMomma - September 4, 2005 04:01 PM (GMT)
Um - AHEM.

:pics:

icecrystal - September 5, 2005 03:40 PM (GMT)
Be patient, woman lol
I have SOME pics, but they don't show his real colour.. he looks light blue, but he's a little MG delta.

I'm going to take pics of him outside today instead.
