Title: Species tank: Jewel Cichlids

DannyBoy17 - April 7, 2005 01:14 AM (GMT)
Well, I might be setting up a 30-40g aqaurium once I move. Im goin to heavily plant it, and want it to be a Jewel species tank. How many can go in a tank that size?

It will be heavily filtered, and brightly lit. I was think 5-7 if it's 40g, 3-4 if it's 30g. A lot will say this is overstocking, but there will be a ton of swimming room, and tons of plant cover, along with superior filtration. Overcrowding? Maybe once they are full grown. But I think there would be ample swimming space, plenty of room.

Anyways, what do you think? Maybe go a tiny bit bigger?

This wont be until I've got my Nano set up, so this is all just planning at this point.

im probably going to say its the same stocking rules for dwarf cichlids in this case, 2 per 20 gals, because they will breed, they will kick butt and they will fuck uo your tank majorly if you dont give them teritorys, when mine first bred they took up 2 quaters of my 40 gal, and would let any fish pass the line, so i was forced to remove them,
please take this advice,
add some plecs as they dont bother them,

Hi Dannyboy
Jewels can be hard to predict in my experience. They are highly variable in temperament. I've kept individuals that seemed peaceful and shy, more often, they are aggressive enough to be dominant, and rarely I've seen "hyper-aggressive" tendancies from individuals. Well, I know that doesn't help much so, I will suggest no more than six in 40 to start. As was stated earlier, individuals likely will need removing to accomidate for growth and/or breeding. It'll be a cool tank, man. Good luck.
