Title: Aww...no snails
Description: but, look who I bought!

His name is Horatio. Bill named him, so I said that he is his betta. He will be housed at the homestead in a new purple 1 gal. minibow! My 2 and a half year w/ Bill is coming up soon, so I suggested that perhaps he could get me a 2.5 gal. minibow for Horatio as my present. :P I really wanted to try out a snail, but I saw this lil' guy and I thought...'why not?' he'd poop less, smell less, *from what I heard* and mum should have no troubles feeding him :D

He has some swimbladder issues. I wasn't for certian, so when I got him home I sucked up the food/poo stuff off the bottom of his cup and put some of my treated water in his cup. I have sinced lessened the water in his cup *from the pictures* He seems to have no other problems besides that, so when I get him out to the homestead I shall feed him some cooked pea.

Awww! Horatio is very handsome!! Congrats on your new addition!

What kind of snails are you looking for??

Thanks :) I can't wait to get his lil' tank set up. I bought him purple flat-bottomed marbles, a red plant *small one* and I have a wee terra-cotta pot for a cave for him *I stocked up on the pots, oh I love them!*

I just wanted one of those lil' apple snails they sell at walmart as 'mystery snails' I just thought I'd try something non-fishy out. They didn't have any there on Friday, I figured they wouldn't have any today, but I hoped. :P

I figured, if I got a snail, I would've gotten it it's own gallon tank, some new marble rocks, and a plastic plant...so I figured since they didn't have any, and this guy looked like he needed a home, I switched the plastic plant to a silk one, got the tank, marbles, etc. and all is well :)

Oops, this: Oh i thought maybe you were looking for something specific. :) Should read: "Oh i thought maybe you were looking for one for something specific. :)" hehehe, like algae control, keeping a fry tank cleaner...etc. :) I need to proof-read a little more thoroughly. lol

I had one of those apple snails, it was a gold one. Very effective at eating algae and other plants. lol

Anyways, congrats again on your new addition! I was at the local mom and pop petstore the other day looking for female bettas. They didn't have any. lol They had some ct males though, but i didn't like them. It always seems like when you're looking for something specific, they don't have it....but if you aren't looking for anything in particular at all, they have tons. lol Did that make sense?? :)

Oh, he's a very handsome man! :)
I would imagine that once you get him in some clean water and get a good diet going thru him, he'll be swimming like a pro.

CONGRATS!
Hooray for Horatio!

 I have been wanting a snail, too, actually. I blame bettamomma.

Well, I did get some pea down him :P Some he ate, some he spit out...but he did eat some. He's swimming around some, I have the tank about half-full. He seems to be quite happity

MLH Fish-exactly! When I finally decide to get a snail, there isn't one to be seen....lol. What a piffer :P

BettaMomma- Thanks! I took some new pics of him, and will upload them, etc. once I get done w/ this post. The lil' gallon minibows are sooooooooooo Cute!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO LOLOL...... it all starts with just 1 snail..... the horrid case of snailmusthaveus!!

BTW..... the "mystery" snail is most likely a pomacea bridgesii. They get a bit bigger than a golfball.... and the are VERY messy.

If you want to put a bridgesii in with him.... you may want to consider a larger home.

Also..... avoid the mystery snails that look more like a honeybun (they are cannas.... they devour plants.... they also get significantly bigger than bridgesii).

Bridgesii are a very good snail for a clean up crew in the fry tank... but you do need to have the room for them. Make sure it is active when you buy it... the foot size is good.... any serious yellowing of the shell means the snail was kept in a tank high in nitrates (aka... not taken care of well.) Most pet stores do NOT take care of them correctly.... and when a snail that size dies... it seriously screws up your tank.

If you want to know more about them.... check out this site

applesnail.net

I really like them.... but.... they are just as messy as goldfish & plecos. Also they need neutral to high ph ( under neutral and their shells erode.)

*snail geek has spoken*

I was planning on having a snail in it's own tank, and eventually upgrading the gallon to a 2.5 gal. :) I dunno...with my luck, something would go wrong w/ a snail mixed w/ one of my bettas....so I would've kept it seperate. :P

Here are more pics!
