Title: Halfmoon and superdelta...
Description: hhhmmmm....
MLH Fish - September 5, 2005 05:37 PM (GMT)
Okay, i know you all didn't miss my dumb questions while i was gone. lol
If you breed a halfmoon female to a superdelta male, will that help improve the tails of the fry?? I mean a superdelta is just shy of a halfmoon, so if you bred the two together, would you get nice, strong tails and if you keep the water immaculate will you get a higher percentage of halfmoon fry???
I notice that halfmoons are all the rage right now...i was never much into them, they look so delicate and all...but i stumbled on a nice halfmoon female who looks like she'd make a good match for Chutz my opaque white superdelta male....i also thought about using her in a plakat match as well...but, she caught my eye first as a match for Chutz. :)

Females are just as important as the males when it comes to finnage. If they have good branching.... then yeah... good match. Post a picture of her. How many rays does she have?
don't forget.... ya gotta make sure the kids are situated so that they are encouraged to flare and get that spread going.

Here is the link to her auction, i still haven't really decided if i am bidding yet...but i'm seriously thinking about it. lol
Halfmoon Female, Pastel

Well.... let's see.... really nice dorsal.... she has dt in her background...
They have her under hm category.... but say she is a stf... does have ok branching...
I would ask the seller how old she is before you buy her. She looks kinda mature to me.
:omg: DANG!!! $28 for shipping on top of her rather hefty $22+ pricetag??? Sorry... lol... but $50 for her seems really high.
All that matters is if you like her.

I never really care much about price...i mean if it's over $50 total(includ. shipping) i get kind of iffy...but what made me decide she was a no-go was that she was coming from Hawaii...and if i remember correctly, i think it'll be more money or something. I remember there was some reason why i only look at the continental US and not Alaska and Hawaii...just can't remember what it is. :)
Anyways, i'm sure there will be others like her. lol At least similar in coloring. :)
But thanks for the advice, i really know next to nothing about rays and all that. :)

Here's a better one from the same seller

As for price, it your choice. I actually think it's a steal. It is almost impossible to get a breeder to release quality females that form their foundation stock and when you do they are going to be costly. We've sold females as high as $150 as shown in our gallery and even at that it is still something we rarely if ever do. A breeder spends years and years working a line to his perfection and for that you will pay the price if you want quality.

Yeah well..... all I have to say is Wattt & Duen. They do seem to have a lot of marble in their stock though.... but AWESOME fish. I have several true hm females from them.... LOL.... actually most of mine are from them.... I love colorful females with crazy branching. Really exceptional finnage.... lots of rays ... hold their form extremely well... coughtilltheyspawnandthemaleshredsthemcough.
Stateside.... Victoria Parnell aka Betty Splendens has some great stock too. She did very well in the IBC competitions. She really breeds for fabulous bettas. She does have more than she lists.... you just have to ask and let her know what you are looking for.
This is just from my experiences. No doubt there are a ton more out there...lol... I just have not gotten that far. What I got from them thrilled me to no end.

"True HM" is in the eyes of the beholder !
That being said, I'd put any of my stock up against anyones stateside regardless of how well they do in political competitions.
As for Watt, I speak with him regularly and he's got some great stock of which he keeps the best, just ask him and he will tell you so.

True hm is not in the eyes of the beholder. It is either 180 or not. Either they have the rays.... or they don't. That part of it is pretty cut & dry. There are people who pass off SD as hm.... which is a shame. Females are able to spread 180... and the rays they have are just as important as the males.
Of course he keeps the best... as does any breeder. It would be ridiculous to sell off your very best stock and work with lesser quality. Regardless of that... the bettas Watt & Duen sell are fabulous. You get what they post. I was lucky enough to be able to get them in person.
There are some breeders out there that stick a "hm" label on their fish.... and they are not hm. Or posting a picture of a fish and then swapping it for one of seriously lesser quality.... Or altering the picture...
The thing is..... AB does not specify that you have to post a picture of that exact fish as they look right now. In the case of most other fish.... that is not really needed.... but bettas have such variety.... and such fluctuations in price.... that it should be required. A loophole that really needs to be addressed.
Things happen.... on both sides.... but.... the seller that is honest.... and has good customer relations... that delivers what they promise...I am more than happy to shout their names from the rooftops and sing their praises.... which is why I only listed those 2 sellers.
You are right that this second female is better.... at least they also posted that she was spawned and did get damage.

i think you should check out brian's site then m2mb. he has spectacular bettas for sale. he is also very honest in his descriptions and pictures. i haven't been disappointed yet. i am glad that he doesn't compete, gives the rest of us a chance  he is also one of the most prompt people to answer emails and take the time to answer questions.
you can always ask sellers for pics of fish being sold. if they refuse to send you one, i would be hesitant to buy.
