Title: Good idea.. or bad idea?

thatdarndragon - September 8, 2005 10:27 PM (GMT)
Hey kids :)

I have a 5 gal tank, divided with a male on one side, and a female on the other side.

They totally ignore eachother, and have been for a long time.

I was thinking about taking the male out, taking the divider out and make it a female community tank.

the only thing stopping me is the size of the tank, 5 gal.

Is that big enough for about 4 or 5 females? I have 4 females, 3 I'd put together (1 female has been having problems and is much bigger than the rest, so she's a no).

it'd also be an excuse to fill up the tanks I'd be taking the females out of.

what do you think?

Community tanks have me wondering too.. I have an empty 10 gallon I wanna fill up.. just wondering what's the best setup for a female community..

I'd also love the knowledge that a 5 gallon would work. If so, I'd love to put the money out for a nice little 5 gallon setup I've seen at petsmart.. I'd prefer the 5 gallon over the 10 to be honest..

^.^ Hi Draco!!! :cuddle:

5 gallons don't work too well in my opinion, there just isn't enough room for 4 females to live together peacefully. I'd say 10 gallons is the minimum for a female community

Ok, I'm going against the grain here. I say a 5-gallon WILL work... but ONLY if the females are siblings. I have 4 females in my 5-gallon, but they're all from Yeevia. If you have lots of plants and hidies and mellow fish, I think you'll be fine. I think 10-gallons or more makes things a lot more exciting, though... hehe. MORE GIRLS!!

i've been told taht 5 gal is just too small. you never know what those girls are going to do!!! mine live in a 20 long. there are occasional squabbles, but the girls have plenty of room to get away from each other when they want to! :bitchslap:

anyone else has suggestions? this isnt helping much

It depends on you. In my opinion, a 5 gallon long (not hex) would be great for 3-4 female bettas. The plant must have hiding places such as plants, rocks, pvc pipes, etc. Just keep a close eye on the community until your absolutely sure it's going to be fine.

I personally think that if the females are familiar with each other and have gotten along in the past, that might make things easier. That won't completely cut out squabbles, but it should help cut back! :D

Just like with male bettas in a community tank, it depends on the bettas. All you can do is give it a try and be prepared to pull them out if need be. If you do try it be sure to give them plenty of hiding places and plants.
