Title: My two gouramis...
Description: pic's...

MLH Fish - September 10, 2005 02:38 PM (GMT)
Hello. I thought i'd post pic's of my two gouramis that were sharing a divided 20 tall but i took out the divider and they are getting along fabulously. During the day they both swim in all levels of the tank, on either side. Sometimes together, sometimes apart. Both are males, btw. At night when they are sleeping, one sleeps on one side of the tank and the other on the other side.

Anyways, they don't really have names...i just can't seem to think/find ones for them...so i just call them the gouramis. lol

Here's they are:

Nice shots MLH

They look like Jade and Ruby to me, or Emerald and Amethyst.

Thanks Cichlas, the flash made the neon one look greenish...but in the regular fluorescent hood light, he's more of a cobalt blue.

Hmmm...Orky, i kind of like Jade and Ruby. :) Maybe that's what i'll call them. My nephew was calling them Tick and Tock and i have no clue why. lol He's 2 so who knows where he got that at. lol :)

Thanks Cich1. :)

I was a bit worried about the placement of their tank. I left the tank where it was when it had my gold angelfish in it. The angelfish loved watching my nephew play on the floor with his cars and reading books. He would literally watch him off and on throughout the day for like 20-30 minutes at a time. lol So i thought it'd be nice if i could get that lucky with the gourami's being that curious and intrigued with the family. And i thought maybe the outside action might be a good stimulus to keep them entertained.

Well for the first week they were here, of course they were timid and scared easily. At the petstore they came from little kids walked by, adults walked by, etc. off and on throughout the day...but here with the stress of being taken from that home after having been shipped there and the fact that they were lower to the ground then at the petstore...i can understand it.

But when they freaked out when ppl walked by...i thought about moving the tank to a less trafficked area b/c i didn't want them living their lives here in fear and constantly stressed. Their tank is in our front room (living room), right in the path of walking from the front door to the kitchen and family room...and when you come from any of the bedrooms to the kitchen or family room, you have to walk by the tank too. It's right next to that doorway. So it's a high traffic area.

But my dad told me to give them a week or two and if they still freaked out and high-tailed it to the back of the tank when ppl walked by, then we'd move it to the other side of the room where ppl don't walk.

Well they are much better now. Thankfully. They actually rush to the front when ppl walk by now and are rarely at the back of the tank. They don't pay much attention to the going's on in the room...like the angelfish did, but the angel was a cichlid and i hear that they are more likely to actually watch their environment outside of their tanks like that then other fish are. Not sure if it's true or not...but that's what i heard.

Anyways, i did do some research on them before and after i got them...but if anyone who has personal experience keeping them has any info they'd like to pass on about them, i'd appreciate it. I found they really love the blanched cucumbers i throw in their tank a few times a week. I read they are omnivores so they basically get the same diet as the bettas but get extra veggies thrown in too. Peas, cucumbers and green leaf lettuce are what i have tried so far and when i get lazy i use Spirulina flakes instead of blanching the veggies. The meat portion of their diet is mostly (all frozen's are thawed first) frozen beef heart, chopped frozen liver, frozen brine shrimp, frozen mysis shrimp, frozen bloodworms and frozen daphnia. Does this diet sound alright?? I'm having a hard time finding a webpage that actually goes into specificis about diets, most recommend a run of the mill tropical fish flake food. I try to stay away from flake as much as i can and am even now starting to go off of pellets too...only use them with the bettas when i'm short on time or out of frozens....and haven't used pellets with the gourami's. And the spirulina flakes are used very rarely.

So any info that anyone wants to share, i always accept and am grateful for. When it comes to the care of any animal, i feel you can never know too much. :) Thanks again for the compliments Cich1 and i didn't mean to ramble on like that. lol
