Title: A female question

mango4jade - September 13, 2005 02:20 PM (GMT)
Im in the process of setting up a custom sized 2ft tank into a very nice planted tank with some exotic plants. Just wondering if it ok to add a couple female bettas in it. But, if im not going to use the females for breeding...will they get eggbound? Or would you recommend not to add the females?

Regards

Mango, i think that sounds like female betta heaven. lol But like with any fish, you'll need to keep an eye on them for a little while until they get their pecking order all established and settle in. Usually females will get along just fine...but there are some macho girlies in the betta world, so keeping an eye on them and seperating trouble-makers before major damage is done is a good idea. :) I do believe some nips occasionally are to be expected, but you definitely want to seperate if there is some major fin shredding, missing scales, lip locking, etc.

As for them getting eggbound, i don't believe they will...i've only heard of that happening in birds...i believe a female fishes eggs get re-absorbed into the body if they are not bred. Don't take that as fact....hopefully someone with more expertise will jump in on that part. But i know ppl who keep only females in a tank and never have bred them and they are just fine.

Oh yeah and be sure to post some pic's of that awesome sounding tank! :)

Yep, sounds like a great tank for them! I'd go for at least 4, just to make everyone happy. Less can cause a lot of fighting if one of them is a little aggressive. And with a tank that size, you could have a bunch of girls!

I have 5 girls in my 20g and will be adding more eventually. They have not had any problems with being egg bound. They plump up for a few days and then the eggs are absorbed back into their systems.

Sound like you will have some very lucky betta girls in your tank. You should have at least 4 as Saucy said. With two the dominant female will pick on the other, with three the two most dominant will pick on the third. If you have at least 4 it spreads out the bickering and no one is picked on all the time.

Are you meaning that you'll add female bettas along with something else?
If that's the case, what will the other fish be?

If you're talking about just having females in there and no other fish, they will love it!
Oh yeah - they won't get eggbound if there aren't any males around. They'll just let them go in the tank and then most likely eat them. blecky!

Hopefully 2 of each colour. Most are HM females and some CT females.
