Referencing, A Guide to Help You.

Before producing a work of your own, you will need to use the work of others. It could be in the way off Google, books, journal articles, scientific papers, or individual websites. This material we use for factual information is produced under a copyright law.

Without going into too much detail, infringing that copyright, by reproducing such works and copying images without written permission and other stipulations stated by the author or manufacturer, is plagiarism. And this could result in legal action taken against you.

We can still use the information we have found, but only if we reference, either “In-text referencing” or a “reference list” at the bottom of your work.

You need to reference when:

1: Quote: When you quote someone’s exact work.
2: Copying: The use of figures and tables.
3: Paraphrase: When changing someone else words into your own.
4: Summarize: When using someone else’s theory, ideas, data or opinion.

How to Reference: A simple guide:

The main form of referencing is called the Harvard Referencing system, produced in 1986. It is the most common form used to site text and reference.

In Text Referencing:

Web pages
If you use material from a specific web page you need to follow the following structure.
SCIRUS (http:// www.scirus.com.au) provides access to….

Books
If you use material from a book, you must follow the structure below.
A recent study (King & Mann, 1999) shows…

The Reference List:

Books
Use the following structure to list books in your reference list.
Author(s) Year of publication, Book Title, Edition, Publisher, Place of Publication

Web Page
Use the following structure to list web pages in your reference list.
Author(s) Date (when last updated or copyright date), Title of Page, [On-line], Available: URL, Date Accessed:

Example: (The article I used to make this pinned article.)

Morfey, M., Savilla, H., Stirling, J., December 2003, “The Harvard Referencing System- A simple Guide”, Flinders University, Bedford Park 5042, Adelaide, South Australia.
