Vip - April 19, 2005 01:25 AM (GMT)
i just replyied to a post on another forum right and this guy stated that he new it all when it came to looking after fish because he did lots of reading on the net, anyway he said he set up his tank, added the water then the next day went and brought some guppys and now most of them are dieing and swimming upside down and it looks like there going to die, i asked him if he cycled the tank so i just have to wait till he gets back to me.

Now now VIP, if this site gets any bigger, youll have to deal with peeps like that.
Hopefully non who 'proclame' they know it all however! :D

he sounds like a bit of a :dickhead: though.

cich1 - April 19, 2005 03:10 AM (GMT)

Punkypuffer - April 19, 2005 03:24 AM (GMT)

cich1 - April 19, 2005 03:28 AM (GMT)
yeah, sorry i should have clarified that i wasn't bashing newbs just the ones that think they know it all.i still consider myself a newb in alot of respects so yeah i don't look down on anyone else.

Dwarf_Dude - April 19, 2005 05:23 AM (GMT)

Newbies are cool, some are just too impatient and wont listen. The "I know it alls" that takes things to a whole new level. I mean the longer I am in the hobby the more I learn but even worse yet...the more I realize I DONT know!

As it gets larger here I m sure we will have our share too....just like every other forum. Hopefully we handle it all in stride and no one gets upset about it....

Hippiechick - April 26, 2005 02:34 AM (GMT)
what a :dickhead:

I really feel sorry for those poor guppies. Yea at least my oscar could have made their deaths quick and painless.

Hang in there VIP, its tough being diplomatic.

Vip - April 26, 2005 12:33 PM (GMT)
just gets to me though you know hippie, they come in and claim they know it all and dont really need help etc etc morons

Oddball - April 26, 2005 01:19 PM (GMT)
Wow, i guess my sig explains my view, but wow thats BAD! Theres a lesson here, somebody will always be able to help you if yer prepared to listen, he'll jprobably ask what cycling is next

mrsdoubtfire - May 7, 2005 07:36 PM (GMT)
well,(hit me across the head for this lol) thats what i did with everyone of my five tanks. i set them up one day and added fish the next. this is a very unsafe practice i know but i'm another inpatient one. whomever he is, he should have known that guppies are very sensitive to new water which is why his is croaking so fast. i never addd freshwater to my guppy containers but water from my malawi cichlid tank. one time i did a partial water change on my malawi tank, then a few hours later i did a water change with my guppies using water from the malawi tank that had just had the water change. well, a few hours later i went back to check on the guppies and 2 were dead :( so now i know if i'm doing a water change in main tanks, i will have to get some of the water out for my guppies BEFORE i do the water change on the big tank. guppies are very fragile and should be handled with care while changing their water. i would never tell anyone its ok to add fish one day after setting a tank up but this is just what i do(kick me in the head again! lol)

Oy, be careful. Not all newbies are like that. You don't want to stereotype.

There are certain newbies that will get on almost anyone's nerves.
You have the stubborn ones who insist there fish are fine and things like that, the prissy ones who are all, "I don't need to know that my fish tank is overstocked and might kill my fish! I need to know how to cure their sickness!", and the annoying newbies who are always, "HOW DO I DO HTIS?!?!!? CAN SUM1 PLZ HELP ME! MY FISH ARE DYING!!!!!!!!!!" (ah, so they discovered the caps button and punctuation! We also need more information..uhmm..yeah, that just might help. o.o )

Don't get me wrong, I love helping newbies when I can, but when they want to be jerks then I don't want to help them. It's that simple.

I believe 90-95% of the aquarist "population" didn't do research when they first started, or too little. Those who don't learn from their mistakes will suffer from them. Most fish store employees don't help either IME, they either don't know jack or they don't know the right stuff.

What's really sad is how some people have been in the hobby for a year or two, are or once were members of a fish messageboard..and still do everything wrong and ask the same questions.

Most guppies aren't all that fragile...

So many wallies, so few bullets! :banghead:

I shake my head when someone, & 99% of the time they're new to the forum, asks a question, usually about tank size or mixing certain fish, & then proceed to disagree & disregard the answers & advice given. I figure why ask in the first place if your not gonna listen. :computerpunch:

Having said that, as a brand newbie to this forum, I shall endeavour to not be one of THOSE newbies!

Oh & VIP, remember the words of thegreat wise man, Dilbert:

"Never argue with an idiot! They'll drag you down to their level then beat you with experience!"

Oddball - June 3, 2005 06:05 PM (GMT)
lmao, thats a good one, well baramundi, ive learnt to never argue with an idiot, its a pity ill have to stop talking to my self now

barramundi - June 4, 2005 03:37 PM (GMT)
:D

heh, and then when they do take on advise the fighting threads start..
ie: What will win in a fight? Red Devil or a Texas? this person will ask this question about 6 times with each question being a differnt cichlid.

Thats one that really gets on my last nerve. Why would you want to know? Plan on fighting fish you irresponsible little shit? I may want to know others people's experiences on the co-habitating of different species, but for me, I don't get wanting to know who will kick who's ass. Sheesh!

Vip - June 6, 2005 03:02 PM (GMT)
whoa, go hippie lol

dtroup2 - June 6, 2005 08:07 PM (GMT)
When I ask about fighting it is to prevent fights, the people who want to know which will kick the others ass are just sadistic SOB's and shouldn't be in controal of any living creature, sometimes even themselves.
I can understand the eat or be eaten theory in nature, and don't object to using feeder fish but people who put critters together just to see them fight for the sake of fighting piss me off.
A friend of mine says "You are either the dinner or the diner" but that is for food and survival, not some ass's enjoyment.

Oddball - June 6, 2005 10:17 PM (GMT)
A point i made in tank talk, but how'd this stray from newbies and guppies to cichlid fights?

Angelfishboy565 - June 8, 2005 01:38 AM (GMT)
Wow, that newbie will probably never learn. I, myself, am a newbie to this forum, but I have had 5 years of experience with fish keeping. I've done research myself, and I admit, I don't know it all. I once argued with an idiot. :starwars: This was like me was the black one, the person the yellow one.
