Title: What got you started in fishkeeping?

JGoslee - November 9, 2005 04:21 PM (GMT)
When I was about 12 years old I came home from school one day and there was a brand new 10gal tank with 2 tiger oscars in it. My mom just bought it for me for no reason. Mom's are the best.

I got started on fish because it was something different than my friends had. They all had cats or dogs and I am different so I tried fish. been at for about 6 years. Hope my kids like it when they are grown.

My mom also bought me a goldfish when I was 7. It lived for about a week then I had to flush it. Then she remarried and I wasn't allow to have a fish tank. Lame I know. So I pretty much had to wait till I got married. I married when I was 21. Now I'm 23. I have only been keeping fish for two years. Now it's an obsession. I have 7 tanks and growing. I love my mom. She is the best. Now pretty much anyone comes over to the house, leaves wanting a fish tank. No joke.

It's funny how most of us got started thru our parents.

I can blame it on Mc Donalds, the fast food place. When they first came out with the McFish sandwitch they had a promotion going on that if you buy the fish sandwitch you get a coupon for a free fish. The girl behind the counter messed up our order and gave me a stack of the coupons to make up for it. My "free" fish coupons cost my mom about $80.00 once she bought the tank and everything elce
Silly mom thought that it would keep me from gathering all the frog eggs from the ditches, and bringing home all kinds of critters, WRONG, lets just say that I didn't do much wading in my wading pool and she was very careful doing my laundry cause she never knew what would crawl out of pockets.

Growing up my granny raised guppies and I loved them.
Got hooked then.

When I got my dog, the breeder had a fish tank - so I decided to get one, because I liked the guppies... :)

How easy it was to set up a goldfish tank!! And thinking it would help me get a good nights sleep by watching them, Oh how wrong i was, I just spent most of the time staring at them and making adjustments. Its no longer a hobby.... Its an addiction. :banghead:

my mom used to set up booths at weekend fleemarkets, after everone is tearing down there booths merchendice goes real cheap. I was about 12 and A lady was selling betas in little plastic bowls all decorated and everything. I had three dollars and 90 cents in change in my pocket, and i went home with my first fish. He lived for more then two years. The obsession has been growing ever since.
