Title: Which Kind Of Betta?

DVSGRL - November 9, 2005 10:05 PM (GMT)
Hey guys,

I live in Melbourne/Australia and I was just wondering what kind of better would be the best to get? As im new to owning Betta’s I have only had 4 :shy: :)

Does anyone have any pictures of different kinds of betas available?

depends on your tastes. there are over 50 species of bettas with betta splendens being the most popular. there are different tail types within the splendens species. i am assuming that is what you are getting at. i would stay away from veiltails. they make nice pets, but are pretty much undesirable. imo, the halfmoon is the prettiest. there are also superdeltas, deltas, crowntails, double ray crowntails, double double ray crowntails and plakats.

I have no idea about Australia, since I'm in the states, but you can get the same tail types there as you can here. You just need to find a breeder. As far as a few tail types go, here's a few photos of my own bettas and what tail types they are.

This is a Delta Tail, the tip of his tail is wider than the base (where the tail attaches to the body) and when he flares, his fins are symmetrical:

Another delta:

This is a Crown Tail, as obvious by the extended rays:

A Double Tail:

This is a Super Delta, meaning his tail falls just shy of the spread required for him to be a Half Moon:

N/P You'll probably be able to find Half Moons too if you look hard enough. I haven't been able to get my hands on one yet, so I don't have one. ^^ Another stunning tail type is the Rose Tail.

you should contact jodi lea from aussie bettas nici. she has some very nice bettas and also has the ability to import bettas from thailand. i am sure that if you tell her what you are looking for she will be more than willing to help you. jodi lea is extremely nice and generous with her time.

halfmoon the tail is 180 degree circle. makes a D shape.

In Aus...being a betta breeder myself, we have all types in Aus...it really depends on your taste. LFS have many Veil Tails, Deltas and Crowntails. Breeders have all of them. I know 99% of betta breeders in Australia throught a network. They breed mainly Halfmoons (HM), Crowntails (CT) and mainly variety of wilds. Double Tails are getting breed often too.

If asked politely, these contacts would be given away. Most fish gets sold by breeders are generally all show quality fish. All parents are either imported from well known breeders in Asia and the US. All fish are hand selected and are free from defects. Most pairs are no more that $30. Some even cheaper than $20!

Usually in LFS in Aus...Halfmoons are $50-$200 each according to colours and size. LFS are new to HMs thus the increase in price. Their fish usually have some red or blue wash...so if bred will give mutts.

Anyways HTH!
