Title: Pseudotrpheus sp. Elongatus spot
Description: Elongatus "Jewel spot"

Orbital - November 10, 2005 08:33 AM (GMT)
Scientific name: Pseudotropheus sp. Elongatus spot

Common name: Jewel spot

Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa. At locations Hai Reef, and Charo.

Habitat: Sediment rich areas that are also rocky.

Diet: Algae and diatoms fed on from the substrate. Spirulina based foods recommended.

Gender differences: Dominant males will assume a dark, usually black body color with blue spots just below the dorsal. Females can also display nearly the same color at times too. Often using this color during raising her young in its mouth, or displaying to other females.

Breeding: Multiple females to each male, you will need a larger aquarium of at least 55-75 gallons likely. They are mouthbrooders, so females take care of the eggs and fry in her mouth. Fry will be released free swimming, but many become food for the tank mates. If you want to keep more young, I would recommend seperateing the female or stripping the fry.

Temperment: Very territorial, and intolerant of male competition.

Maximum size: 3 1/2", maybe 4"

Temperature & Chemistry: 76-82F / Hard water & pH around 7.8 to 8.6

Minimum tank size: 55 gallons

Recommended tank size: 55 gallons for a species only tank with 1 male and 6-10 females. If other species are in the tank, 75-120G would be better suited.

Tank mates: Other mildly or moderately aggressive mbuna, Synodontis species catfish are suitable also.
