Title: fin rot?
bettakid - November 12, 2005 04:40 AM (GMT)
I think I may have fin rot as my betta is looseing his tail, whats a good product to use?

Not sure how far along your fish's condition is but, if caught early enough treatment can be as simple as conducting daily water changes and keeping conditions optimal. For a stubborn case you may want to consider treating with Melafix or Maracyn-Two.

I have cured finrot by simply doing really frequent water changes, (stop using nets, this can worsen fins, make sure fish is submersed in water at all times, I scoop mine out with a small cup) and adding a pinch or two of Doc Wellfish's salt in the water. Avoid maracyn two unless the case worsens.

Yeah like I said for a stubborn case you may want to consider treating with Melafix or Maracyn-Two.

Have you tested the water? Often times fin rot and other illnesses are brought on by other stresses. Melafix is a good product to help heal fish scales and fins, like JG said.

I've found that bettas get finrot if you like, look at them funny. It is especially common when you first buy them, and they are in those cups at the store, stewing in their own waste. They start to develop finrot, and the stress from the move sometimes make it appear.
Just hang in there, and if it gets REALLY bad, and you fear it might touch the body, there are ways to operate on fish.

I used four treatments of Maracyn 2, clean water, and friends for my fish (to keep his spirits up) to stop a really nasty case of fin rot.
Mild cases I've stopped using Melafix.

Instead of starting a new topic on fin rot, I think I'll bring this one back up.
All of a sudden it seems like our bettas fin rot worsened over night. I'm confused about Melafix, at what stage is it appropriate to use it? We just did a partial water change on Sunday, would that help or have anything to do with it??

Melafix won't help finrot and is too strong to use full strenght on bettas. It can actually burn the fins and make matters worse. I don't use it at all because it isn't a medicine. It is only a type of tonic that can promote regrowth, but doesn't do anything to stop finrot. Regular water changes, salt and temperatures in the upper 70's to low 80's are the best cure, but if it has gone very far you can use maracyn 2, or Jungle Fungus Clear (Jungle Fungus Eliminator is basically the same thing in a different form). Just be aware that once a betta gets a bad case of finrot, it seems to be very hard to totally eliminate and just about the time you think it is all cleared up, it starts all over again. You will often have to repeat treatment for the rest of the bettas life.

would our LPS have that medication you speak of? and is it safe to use with our other fish?
LvBettas - April 12, 2006 07:48 PM (GMT)
I don't know where you are located, but if you are in the US it is readily available at most pet stores, WalMarts and Meijer's. As far as it being safe for other fish, it would probably depend on what fish you are referring to, but I know it is safe for most freshwater fish. I have plecos, which I have to be careful around with meds, and it is safe for them. I've also used it in tanks with snails and ghost shrimp and never had any problems.

Our other fish are a cory catfish, and 5 zebra danios. We'll check the LPS today for either of the two meds you suggested. Thanks!
