Title: Plants for a Plant Killer

Leema - December 4, 2005 02:39 AM (GMT)
I suck with plants. I've tried lots but they've always died. :(

Now I'm trying to do it right - I have two globes in my 5ft, instead of one, and have added a fertiliser.

So what plants would you recommend for plant killer?

The only thing I've kept alive is Java Moss.

What is the wattage per gal on the tank?

Java fern, elodea, watersprite, anubis, crypts, swords are some that come to mind as being easy to me.

I've thrown out my boxes. :( I looked on the globes, one was 40 W. The other one didn't have anything written on it.

300 L tank - 79 US gallons or 65 'imperial' gallons...

So that would be at least 2W per gallon - would be more than that depending on the other globe.

I will look into those plants - but some of those are 'root' plants, eh? Do you think I have a greater chance of killing those than 'feral' plants like the watersprite?

(Tried watersprite and swords before - both died. Will try again.)

I use walmart bulbs, Philodendrian slips and spider plants.

By my calculations you probably only have 80 watts of light over your 79g, which will only give you 1 watt per gallon.

If you want to grow plants I would suggest putting another double light strip on there, You can use a shop light for this. Then you will have 2 watts per gallon.

There is not really enough room on the top of my tank to fit in two more globes. So I'm just going to have to work with what I've got, and once these get old replace with more powerful globes (if possible).

What are 'Walmart bulbs'? I'm in Australia - there is no Walmart.

"Wallmart bulbs" are a dry plant bulb that Wallmart sells, I can't remember their actual name but you may be able to find them at your lfs or mega pet store over there, sorry for the confusion.

I have never seen dry bulbs for sale. O.o But I have never looked either, so will have to ask my LFS guys if they. May not be over here.

Crypts. Crypst. And more Crypts. Many of the common ones will handle lower light. Just remember, they take a while to get established, and don't like being moved around or fussed with. So chuck a few in, sit back and wait!
As a fellow Aussie - please, please, please don't be tempted by any real feral plants! They have caused such problems in our environment, and we all need to be very responsible!
