Anyone here know where I can get these guys? Like a breeder or a website? I've been trying to get them for a while now but the lfs dose not stock them and they are rare on Aquabid. :S
There are lots of fish called hillstream loach
so it may help to know the scientific name of the one(s) you want
there is Beaufortia kweichowensis,Gastromyzon ctenocephalus, Gastromyzon danumensis, Gastromyzon lepidogaster, Gastromyzon punctulatus,
Gastromyzon ridens, Gastromyzon sp. (1),Gastromyzon sp. (2),
Glaniopsis multiradiata, Hemimyzon formosanum, Hemimyzon Sinensis,
Homaloptera bilineata, Homaloptera cf. ogilviei & Homaloptera confuzona.
There is proberbly more but you get the idea.
All HSL require a well oxygenated tank with a very powerfull flow
(3 or more big powerheads). they need large flat surfaces to graze on
(pebbles, boulders etc)
basically you are trying to create a river in a tank
search the net for setting up a river tank.
on a side note
HSL are also known as hong kong pleco, butterfly plecos, butterfly loaches and many many more
Wow...I didn't know there were so many. I'm just looking for hillstreams in general. I don't mind what kind it is. But the Beaufortia kweichowensis and the Gastromyzon ones look a lot like what I'm looking for.
As for current...I'm sure I have a good current since the fluval I have runnning on it is overkill. I'm getting a power head for it anyway as it will be a future planted tank.
I had one of these loaches in my planted tank up until a few weeks ago when I sadly found that he had died. Let me tell you that I liked the fish so much that it actually put me in a bad mood for like 4 days. No joke! Truly one of the coolest freshwater species of fish I have ever owned, and because of that I have decided that I will probably get a few of them next time. Try it out, you wont regret it.
