Title: Finally took the plunge...
Ritsuko Nashida - December 16, 2005 04:21 PM (GMT)
Finally took the plunge and got some Sea Horses :woo: :woo: :woo: . I found a few that looked cool and were eating frozen food, so I brook down and started that long awaited Sea Horse only reef tank. Got a few pics I can cropped tonight and resize and toss on the forum and share a littel eye candy tomorrow.
Guess I will have to start working on a pinned topic for a care sheet and tank set up for these guys if there is some interest there.

Lets see if this will work....
My WebpageFinally! Not exactly what I wanted to do but I supose it works none the less and thats all that counts....
The Tank is a 24 gallon Truvue "show tank". Its a bit tall which is real conducive to keeping sea horses. I got lucky and found some that were fairly colorful that were already trained to eat frozen "mini-mysis" so although I didnt know much about them I pounced on three of them. They are doing pretty well thus far. I have done a lot of research on them over the years and especially in the last week or so. If you want to do a tank for these guys and have questions let me know and I will see if I can get the answers for you. In fact Im thinking about putting an article together one them in case someone wants to give them a go

Nice gorgonian in the back there I am thinking about setting up a tank for seahorses but i'm moving in a couple of months so need to hold off for a little while plus just set up a propogating tank to fraf xenia mushrooms and gorgonians. so i'm working on that right know. but very nice keep us posted on how it goes.

:smoke: That Seahorse is awsome. Im not a huge fan myself. Im thinin bout doing a macro tank next, and placing a pair or two of pipe fish in the system. Alot more research will resume though! :) Very nice Ritsuko.
Do you part own AT?

Thanks for the words of encouragement Gents.
They are turning out to be quiet interesting and fairly easy at this point and are really looking nice in the tank. I guess that like Pipefish the secret is in purchasing "proven feeders" from the get go.
I wasnt so sure that I would find them all that entertaining myself but the longer I have them (2 weeks now) the more I dig the lil' guys. Now more that ever I find myself on Ocean Riders website drooling at some of the outstanding specimens they often have available. I have got to get a pair of those guys even if the price does break my back! They really make great Nano Reef inhabitants of at least the yellow ones I got do.
Guess I will have to see if I can get a full tank shot of my Nano Reef in here to give you all a better idea of the type set up they need...

This tank seems well suited to Sea Horses. The water flow and current is Moderate, lighting is adequate for corals both SPS/LPS and tank shape is optimal for Sea Horses. The one area of short sidedness on my part is the addition of the Hammer coral. Due to a Sea Horses disposition to wrap on to any hold fast using corals with Potent sweeper tenticles is a no-no. I think due to the small size of my hammer frag and the fact that there is a weath of other objects to cling too that this hasnt yet been a problem but this coral will need to be removed before it gets much more in the way of size. If your going to start a Sea Horse tank this should be at the front and formost of you mind during planning and tank set up. Consider too tank mates as well as Sea Horses are slow and deliberate feeders and in a tank with aggresive feeding fish will deny them adequate food intake. Although they are best left to a species only tank, I have added a small Sailfin Tang for algae control on a Temp basis until this tank is better established.
Hopefully the notes and observations here will assist those interested in setting up such a tank.

just a caution.. I wouldn't have your seahorses in with your sail-fin...
you will find your seahorses being picked on at some point down the road...
so i just thought i'd give you a heads up...

A kind of old topic but haven't been here a while to post anything lol.
Love the seahorses. In about a month or two im going to purchase a mated pair of H. erectus.
Not 100 percent on this, but to me it looks like you have H. reidi. A very common seahorse in the trade and also one of the hardiest.
And yes I also would advise you not to keep a sailfin tang with them, no matter what the size of the tang.
I would like to post my article on seahorses if there's a place if you haven't already, not trying to put you down or anything but I've had this done for a while lol.
