:thanks:
What kind of clean up crew do you have mate?
Ive never had an algae problem, not even with brown algae..
I'll give you a list of excellent cleaners:
- salarias blenny (aka algae eating blenny) - takes care of the rocks and thick algae on the tank walls
- diamond goby (aka sand sifting goby) - takes care of the sand and algae in on on top of it
- yellow tang or kole tang - they pick at the walls, rocks, etc...
Inverts:
- turbo moon snails - the HUGE ones - they do sit around during the daytime, however at night, they motor around
- nassarius snails - covers IN the sand and the extra food particles
- astrea snails (duh) - lazy buggers, but they get SOME of the job done
Also, you will get the algae build up if you have too strong of wattage of light or you leave your light on for too long. I know corals need around 7 hours of light a day... some more and some less... but cut down on the hours your light is left on.
If you have a "moon" light, leave that on for a few hours. But definitely try either cutting back on light, or getting a whack load of lawn mowers ;)
PM me if you need any more help
Sorry for the delayed response but...
You already have some very excellent advice to start with, might wanna give it some serious thought and see what gives...
There are many reasons for algae (bad) in the aquarium. To really fix the problem you have to find out why its a problem. One possible cause is high nutrient loads in the aquarium. The can come from a high bio-load in the tank (too many fish) over feeding your tank. Other possible causes include but are not limited to high Phosephate levels, inadequate maintenance, inadequate filtration, improper lighting of lighting that needs new bulbs as well ad insuficient clean up crew.
While adding more clean up critters to the tank can certianly help the symptoms you still may not have fixed the problem, as such the problem will in all probability return again later on down the road yet again. To better help you fix the problem I need to know a lot more information than you have given me here since I can see the tank or your set up. Can you provide the following...?
Tank Size
Fish in the tank number and size
Filtration system
Lighting type and schedule
When did you last change the bulbs and what Kelvin rating is the bulbs
Ph level
Nitrites levels
Nitrate levels
Phosphate Levels
Type of substrate and rocks if any
Clean up crew size and compisition
What kinda corals do you have
By giving me the above requested information it is possible that I can narrow down the root cause and then give you a couple of possible solutions that may prove to be a more effective long term solution. Algae problems are tough on the hobbyist and can sometimes get the better of you and is one of the biggest reasons hobbyist get flustrated and leave the hobby, but it can be beat!!!!
