:wtf: I have a freshwater fish tank. I have two green spotted puffer fish in it. I am trying to change my freshwater tank into a brackish water tank. Do I need to take the fish out before adding the salt??? If so, how do I go about putting them back in???
I have a 30 gallon tank. I also have some "instant ocean" salt. And I have one of those meters that reads the specific gravity in the tank.
PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

Thanks
if your tank is established (ie- fully cycled and a good bacteria colony) then you only want to raise your salt level by .02 on your hygrometer a week because if you go any faster you will kill your bacteria. the gradual increase will enable it to adapt/ grow new bacterias so the system doesn't crash. your goal salinity will be around 1.010-1.015. eventually these puffers would appreciate a fully marine tank when they are adults.
your other option would be to move the puffers into another tank with some of the established bacteria/filter media and start the 30 gallon all over. this would shock the fish however if they have been in the fresh for a while.
ive had the jade puffers before.. all i did was keep them in a freshwater tank... set up the "brackish" tank (in my case it was Full saltwater)
once your tank is at the right salinity 1.015 (id probably just go full salt, its alot easier to maintain a steady gravity) in the new tank, put the puffers in a bucket, maybe just under a 1/3 of their FW tank water in it, and do a drip from the brackish/saltwter tank.
Drip: take a small hose (syphon hose or what not) tie a knot so the water drips through it
once the water in the bucket has doubled put the puffers in the tank... and they're aok!!! he drip should take about an hour to be on the safe side...
anyways.. that's what i did with my mollies, puffers, monos etc... so if anyone else can differ.. please correct me if i have been wrong...
