hello all,

I was woundering if Ceratophyllum demersum horn wort or coontail (all the same plant i think.... if not plz can some on I.D the plants coontail and hornwort)
will grow in southern arizona. i found this natural pond 10 or so feet deep and there was this plant that looked like hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum) this site shows what the plant sorta looked like hornworttml

but i didnt think it would be alive still in the winter. the pond dosn't freeze it is too deep, it looks like it has been there for a long time constantly fed by a dam of some sort. but was wondering if that plant would be safe in my aquarium or would it die or could it kill my fish??? there are no fish in the pond that i could see, but i didnt have a long time to look :P

i love finding plants in the wild, :winner:

That looks alot like the plant that is overrunning a nearby lake. They say that it grows very fast and soon takes over the whole water system. The lake is totally covered with this crap. You can even take a boat out without getting this lake weed stuck in your prop. If it's the same plant I would not reccomend putting it in your tank. But then again I'm no expert on aquatic plants.

Yeah, the link you provided is classic. A list of noxious pests. LOL!

IM sure the aurthorities would love for you to take some. Just dont release any back into the wild. It wont kil your fish, infact, youll probably get annoyed at how much it will grow, and how much prunning it will need! :P

  i might just go get some, but will it need a LOT of light from being in the full sun all day? or should i not worry about the light and just the pruning????

i cant wait to prune my plant :drunk:

I have a little bit of Hornwort in my planted tank, I recomend it. It filters out Amo. and Nitrates so you don't have to preform to many water changes. (it's proven) It's a very hardy plant able to survive under low light. IME they grow fast and long in low light and in high light they grow slow and become very bushy.
