Title: Alage Explosion
Description: *sigh*
ShadowElite951 - January 25, 2006 08:22 PM (GMT)
I thought I had it under control till it went POOF.
My entire tank is green. The plants are covered with some sort of hair alage. The glass and rocks are dover with green dot alage and this...dusty loose alage. I threw in my three plecos and a snail today from my 55 gallon in there for backup. My flying fox really hasn't done anything...and my rubber nose pleco passed away yesterday. :bye:
Should I wait a little while and see if it dies out or should I be doing something else?

When I got algae, I:
-modified lighting (so it was erratic and short)
-got (false) siamese algae eaters
-got snails
-removed algae by hand when I saw it.
For now, I'd at least modify the lighting and see if the plecos and snails handle it.
I was under the belief that flying foxes don't eat algae... *research* Nothing reliable, but they're supposed to not eat algae when they're mature or when they have other food available. :dunno:

Tomorrow I'm going to the lfs to see their new shipment and I'll pick up a few ramshorn. And flying foxes are supposed to be alage eaters...they are mentioned in many plant related websites where I get my research.
And a really random question if anyone cares to answer. My plants are letting off air bubbles of some sort...They emerge mostly from my Wistera and Cabomba. Is this a problem...or normal plant behavior?

Some plants do let off air bubbles - haven't heard of those two doing it, but Ricca certainly does. I wouldn't be worried.
Another thing - do you have an airstone in the tank? I'd be putting that on to increase oxygen in the tank.
I thought I missed out something on my list.

what you are seeing is referred to as "pearling". it's part of the photosynthesis process. absolutely normal behavior, your plants are producing oxygen.

Told you that Co2 thing was a bad idear.
I would also be careful of that snail... He ate more plants than algae! Wrecked my sheat and still left the tank filthy. Why you think I gave him to you? Well besides the fact he was half eaten by the betta. Sorry to hear about the rubberlip. He was awesome. :rip:

Yeaah...He left nice holes in my Wisteria... :pft:
I threw him back with the cichlids... :guns:
My aglae is now under control. My plecos did a nice job. I pulled out my plants and brushed of alot of alage and loose materials. I scrubed the glass, rocks, substrate, and driftwood down and hooked up my Magnum 350 to make the water...a little less cloudy. So now the tank is clear. woot!
I still miss that rubber nose... :sook:

It's OK Darlene...... I was informed by the fish manager at Petsmart that they will be changing their line of fish. texas and Firemouths are getting blown out, but the Sailfin Pleco will be a regular addition apparently.
