Title: Mouth Rot?

69 Mustang - January 31, 2006 09:03 PM (GMT)
I have 2 female bettas in a 29 gallon tank. I noticed that my giant female crown tail had something wrong with her lower lip. Almost looks as if a small bit of it is missing. Today I noticed that the other female looks as if her entire lower lip is gone. Is there a disease that would cause this or could something have been fighting with them? the male I have in with them seems fine and he seldom mothers the females due to the many hiding places in the rocks and large tank size. The only thing I could think of is female battling or the Firemouth Cichlid that chases them off once and again. I have since quarantined them and am waiting to see what my next move should be.

Are they still eating?
Can you post a pic so we can see the mouth?
Are there any problems with the fins?
Any fuzzyness or anything else growing on them?

No decent pics, no other outward signs of infection. The one female with the most damage is hiding and don't know how well she is eating. The larger female with half a lip seems to be eating and acting normally. I will try and get better pictures later

If there are no other signs of distress I would assume that the cichlids are to blame, as long as that's the case I would suggest Mela-fix or Betta-fix. I havn't personally had to use these products but they have been reccomended by several people in the past. It also couldn't hurt to add some stress coat.

Hopefully someone with more experience will also chime in here.
