Title: Saltwater ICH!!!!
vTEC - February 1, 2006 06:19 AM (GMT)
this is being posted here because no one really browses the saltwater section!! Apparently THEY ARE TOO GOOD FOR SW FISH!
meanies
anyways... i had a few questions:
My maroon clownfish recently came down with ich, and i put him in my 10 gallon quarantine tank for about 2 1/2 weeks to treat with a copper treatment, it didnt clear up, and i had to move him into the main tank again because of my dad freaking out about "I DONT WANT TANKS ALL OVER THE HOUSE" and he threatened to flush my clown..
so he has some "remainders" of ich, but he's healthy as a dog, eating a tonne, sitting in his BT Anenome, and just motoring around the tank harassing a hermit here and there...
is the ich that he has on his body going to slowly kill him? Or if he remains un-stressed will that be fine too? I dont have the space to quarantine him again.. and throwing him in a 2.5 gallon QT tank isnt that stable... so give me some ideas...
AND NO FRESHWATER DIPS

Honestly the only way to get rid of ick is to put the fish in a QT tank and use hyposalinity/copper treatments.
If there are no fish in the main tank, the ich will die off. Ich will only host fish, and will not infect corals or inverts.
There is no reef safe chemical cure that will work. People claim that Kick Ich has worked for them but the only two proven methods of curing ich is hyposalinity and copper in a QT tank. Freshwater dips can help but if anything, it's more stressful on the fish. That should be used as a last resort.

I usually leave SW alone because I don't know jack about it lol.
However I have read that doing a quarantine in reduced salinity water works in a simular fashion as adding salt to fresh water. I know one of the links in the pinned thread at the top of this area talks about it.

**UPDATE**
My clownfish has cleared up with Ich and now has a mate :P A new maroon clown fish and these two are adorable... one day they'll be getting a long.. and the next time they'll be arguing over who gets that big chunk of shrimp

Good to hear that you got it figured out, and what may I ask did you do for treatment?

I immediately quarantined them and used the Maracine version of "Copper Kick Ich" I will post the brand name when I get home from Alberta.
My one maroon, the yellow tang, and my royal gramma were in my 10 gallon tank and did a full dosage on the copper medication. The medication I used had recommended to only leave the carbon filtre in if it was over 2 months old, and that filtre was over 2 years old so I left it in.
They were in there for over 3 weeks and I didn't notice any clearing of ich on the gramma or the tang just the clown.
Eventually I caved and determined whether to do a freashwater dip on the tang and see how it went. I had some tunnels and caves (artificial ones) in the tank and the gramma became wedged in a narow tunnel and stressed out so much that i finally figured out why they weren't clearing up. And i had to euthanise the gramma.
The tang also didnt survive the copper treatment and it was only the clown left.
Then after having my dad freak out saying he wanted the extra tanks closed up, i had to move my clown back into the main tank... and I was lucky enough that he didnt go through a heck of a lot of stress and he cleared up.

Sorry to hear about your losses :rip:
And that your dad was being "difficult"
vTEC - February 28, 2006 07:17 PM (GMT)
blah it's all good..
Really... Al's is a great place to pick up the ends.... "Lauren we have an extra Tang in the top tank that we need a home for, can you take it?" Hell yeah!!!! Why do you think I have 100lbs of live rock that i haven't paid for????
As for my dad being difficult..... he is being a jerk because my bedroom is in the basement... he's so concerned about the "water evaporation" and the "mildew" buildup... So I am going to get out of control with fish and then tell him either I can get my kitten Rizzo up to his place OR i keep my fish...

Good luck!
